Itinerary

20 min

Biarritz is many things: Europe’s gateway to surfing in the mid-50s, a pioneer of beach tourism (they started promoting it 200 years ago!), and one of the most coveted places to see and be seen. We’ll walk along its promenade admiring the sea and its sumptuous hotels until we reach its 44-meter-high lighthouse.

60 min

We’ll visit the colorful market Les Halles to take the pulse of daily life and get in touch with the greatest that France has to offer: its cheeses, its charcuterie and its bakeries / patisseries. Bon Apetit!

60 min

Protected by a bay, Saint Jean de Luz is a peaceful summer fishing village where we we’ll visit the Maison Adam patisserie where, in 1660 (!) they created the famous ‘macaron’. At that same time, a certain Johannès de Suhigaraychipi, a French corsair who captured more than 100 British, Dutch and Spanish ships, was sailing through the area.

Pass by

They call it ‘La route de la Corniche’ and it is one (yet another!) of the most beautiful roads in the Basque Country. The section between Ciboure and Hendaye is only 8 kilometers long, but you’ll never want it to end. Well, actually, you will, because when it's over, it will mean that you've reached...

60 min

The last (or first, depending on how you look at it) city on the Spanish coast is a privileged place with sea, river, bay, mountains, a fishing district at the forefront of world cuisine (says the New York Times!), and a walled medieval neighborhood (with streets not suitable for heels) at the top.

Pass by

There is no better way to get to San Sebastián than through the road that runs along the crest of Mount Jaizkibel, and from which you can see the Basque coast to Bizkaia.

Marlena

Our family’s tour experience today with Marlena was as special as it was perfect. Her knowledge of the various towns we visited was extraordinary - and only matched by her genuine pride in, and passion for, the Basque region more broadly. Her attention to detail was excellent, as was her relaxed and fun nature. And she took the stress away from us at what would have been at times perhaps difficult driving situations for us as foreigners. Despite the fact she leads several tours every week, we never felt like our experience was transactional - she genuinely took an interest in all four of our family members. It wasn’t forced or contrived, it was natural. And it added huge value to our overall experience on our tour with her. But the fundamental reason for us writing this review is the fact that even after our tour had finished Marlena continued to help us navigate elements of our visit - from restaurant suggestions to even helping arrange transport from our accommodation to the train station at the end of tour time in San Sebastián. Marlena is a credit to the organisation. Her gift is her ability to make a moment into a memory. And that is why our holiday experience with her will forever be treasured by all members of our family.

Be Ready to See A Lot

This was a fantastic tour to get a sample of Biarritz, St Jean de Luz, and Hondarribia. Our guide Irene was informative, engaging, and made sure we saw all the major sites. She just didn't drop us off, and tell us to explore. In each area, she walked us to the important sites, and explained what we were seeing. The tour is a good mix of seeing the cities and more natural beach sites. All of which were really beautiful. What I found most interesting was actually at one of the beaches where you can see layers of the earth that were initially horizontal, but slowly moved vertically; allowing you to see layers from different time periods. This tour encompasses so much. We had a great time and would definitely recommend.

Operator response

We loved reading this because you noticed exactly what makes this tour so special. It's not just about visiting beautiful places, it's about understanding what you're looking at, whether that's the history of a town, the local culture or even the incredible geology of the Basque coastline. Those ancient rock formations have amazed people for generations, and they're always a highlight for curious travellers. A big thank you for your kind words about Irene as well. She loves bringing each stop to life, and we're delighted she helped make the day both interesting and enjoyable. We hope the Basque coast keeps calling you back!

A day in the French and Spanish Basque Country with exceptional food and wines.

We were picked up in a private new vehicle travelling from San Sebastián to the French Basque coast visiting fresh produce markets sampling local wines and cheeses and then onto a fish market to eat local oysters prawns and crab and then onto a winery to sample locals wines with pintxos and tuna and then to Hondarribia to experience a medieval fishing village. Overall a wonderful experience. The guides were local and passionate and knowledgeable about basque culture and history. The local produce was exceptional and importantly for us we had a local experience. Highly recommended.

Operator response

What a beautiful day across both sides of the Basque Country :) Markets, seafood, local wines, little fishing towns and Hondarribia at the end is such a special combination of flavors and culture. We’re really happy you felt the experience was authentic and local, because that’s exactly what we try to share through the people, places and food we love ourselves. Eskerrik asko for joining us and for appreciating the passion our guides put into these experiences!

We’re really happy to hear that :) Lucía always puts a lot of care into making sure every detail feels easy and personalized, especially when it comes to adapting experiences to different needs and dietary restrictions. That flexibility and personal touch are a big part of how we like to do things at Ikusnahi. Thanks for trusting us during your time in the Basque Country!

Awesome time in the Basque Country

We had a fabulous time going to Biarritz, Saint Jean de Luz and Hondarribia from San Sebastián. Our tour guide, Olatz, was very knowledgeable and fun and we really enjoyed the beautiful scenery, the markets, the Basque festival in Saint Jean De Luz and Olatz's company. Highly recommend this private tour.

Amazing Basque Coast

Our tour with Olatz was the highlight of our trip to Spain. The Basque region is new to us, so seeing these three towns was really great. Each unique and wonderful in their own way. We all left the tour, and our stay in San Sebastian, knowing we had to return to this area. It was a perfect end to our time in this wonderful country.

Operator response

Karen, this is such a lovely thing to read :) The Basque Country has a way of surprising people, especially when discovering both the French and Spanish sides together, each town with its own personality, history and atmosphere. We’re so happy Olatz helped make it such a special ending to your trip to Spain. And honestly, the feeling of “we need to come back” is something we hear a lot around here ;) We’ll be waiting for you!

A wealth of knowledge

Ania is a wealth of knowledge. She led us to the best places for food and history. Basque Country is complex and beautiful. She helped us discover that with our own eyes

Operator response

Ania will be so happy to read this :) The Basque Country really is complex, layered and full of identity, history and traditions, and she loves helping people discover that deeper side beyond the obvious postcard views. We’re very happy you enjoyed the mix of culture, food and stories along the way and that the region revealed itself through your own eyes during the day together. Eskerrik asko for exploring this special corner of the world with us!
