It was our last full day in Athens and we were looking for something to do. My husband loves going to distilleries and even though they don’t distill there, Polykala has a lovely tasting room there. Nina, the founders great grandfather (I think)? Was a lovely host that let us try many samples. We bought a couple bottle to use for the rest of our trip and a couple to take home. They were all delicious!
What a fantastic way to spend an hour! Nina was so friendly and knowledgeable and we learnt so much and generally had a wonderful time. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this experience to others!
Amazing experience and a must do if you visit Athens! Nina is so warm and kind. Her family's history with this distillery is what makes this experience so special. The liquors were delicious and we brought home a few. The big bottles are the best value and make luxury gifts so make sure you have enough space in your suitcase. There is something for every taste and preference. Nina will also guide you to find your perfect drink. My only regret was not getting a bottle of their coffee liqueur but I'll have to go back for it. This is a perfect experience for groups, couples or even solo travelers. Don't forget to write in their guest book!
Spent February in Athens. After days of looking at ruins (just another pile of rocks - time for a change) visited Polykala. Small shop with very informative hostess (grand-daughter of founder). Wide assortment of liquors from floral to chocolate. All made from local ingredients. Variety of sizes. I settled on small box of 3. Perfect unusual enjoyable souvenir.
Thank you Frances!
We booked. We walked and navigated to arrive, only for it to be closed. Why advertise, if you’re not even open?
Hello again. I have answered on another platform and directly to you as well. We are really sorry for the inconvenience. It's a Greek extra bank holiday for the stores and the system was not upadted. We have refunded you.
1 toured a local distillery, family-owned and operated by a fourth-generation distiller, with the original site located just across the street. The business has shifted from distillation to blending, infusing, and liqueur production. I sampled their products and purchased some mini bottles. The owner kindly shared her family's history and patiently answered my questions. Fun fact: The family name is Polykala which means ‘Very Good’ in Greek. They had an advertisement from the 1950 saying “Make sure your liquor is Very Good at VeryGood Distillery” basically. The play on words works better in the original Greek obviously.
Hello!! Thank you for visiting!!! In fact the old ad says. Drink Polykala (verygood) drinks so you will be forever good!
This place is great! The tour guide was friendly, knew so much and was willing to share the wealth of information. The tasting was great and I was able to get most of my souvenir purchases there. When we travel, I am always looking for something unique to bring back to my friends and family. Worth the time and the flavors of the liquors are wonderful!
Thank you for your nice words!!!
Nina is the best!!! She is so knowledgeable and friendly! She let us taste many different liquors. They were all very good but my favorite was the coffee. My son’s favorite was the lemon. We bought both! I highly recommend visiting this business, where you are made to feel like family!
Thank you!!!
Arrived at 0915 for my 0930 visit, the Distillery did not open, left at 1000. Very disappointed. Not happy with the minimum characters, nothing more to say
Hello Wiliam, I am really sorry for your disappointment and you are absolutely wright that we did not open the store on time. I sent an apologise note thgrough viator for our late opening and explained the situtation and offered that you can come any time you want that day or the next day and if you could not you request for a refund. That day I came urgently to open the store as nina due to health problems could not. But as luck is not always at our side I faced a flat tire and I came late. once again I apologise for the inconvenience.
From the warm welcome from Nina to the classy showroom to the delicious samples, this is one of the finest memories I will have of Greece. This establishment has such a rich history and justified family pride that it was a pleasure to learn about. I thoroughly enjoyed talking and laughing with Nina. The product line is top-notch, and I look forward to savoring my purchases at home. The next time I visit Athens, Polykala is on my list.
Thank you so much for your nice words! Nina is a pleasent member of our family and enjoyed all the time that she spend with you! Hope you enjoy our products back home!
