The opera teathre of Palermo is famous as the location of the most dramatic scene of The Godfather III. Anyway, this monument is also a symbol of the rebirth of the city after decades of Mafia violence.
The longest wall painting in Italy (70 meters long) represents some of the most known mafia victims and is part of an urban renovation project. It is both the chance to become familiar with the victims' faces and to shoot some good pictures!
The colorful old open-air market is the perfect place to understand better the relationship between the Mafia and shopkeepers while walking through one of the most interesting and loud areas of the city.
Piazza della Memoria, by the Palerm Court House, is a Memorial dedicated to judges and prosecutors killed by the Mafia.

Along the Cassaro, you will come across with an orange sticker on their windows. Their owners - like this famous gelato place - have said NO to paying the extortion racket, or ‘pizzo’, and have joined the mafia-free critical consumption campaign promoted by the grassroots movement Addiopizzo. You too have the chance to stop and support them with some “good” shopping!
The City Hall of Palermo has been the seat of corrupted politicians, as well as of the ones who have been fighting against the Mafia.

This tour was incredibly informative about how organized crime affected Sicily and especially Palermo. Our guide took us around the city and explained what life was like before the prosecution of the mafia and after. It’s an important part of Sicilian history to learn that is often glamourized, but this revealed how it affected (and still affects) average people.

In July it is hot and it’s not always possible to find shade which can make the tour uncomfortable. For me the main downside was being unable to clearly hear the tour guide as her voice was not always strong against the background noises from motorbikes etc. otherwise it was informative.
Excellent and informative tour. Salvatore was an excellent guide who imported a great deal of knowledge. Even my young niece paid attention to his every word. The pace of the tour was great and he was pleased to answer any questions that anyone in the group had. I highly recommend this tour. The admission fee was at a reasonable price point. The length of the tour was perfect. The group size was manageable. Salvatore's passion for the mission of the No Mafia organization is a apparent, important and contagious.
