Itinerary
We will live a phenomenal experience learning about wool carpets, from how they are painted with natural colors, to weaving on pedal looms. Here you can exercise your coordination because you will practice on a real loom to be able to make mats. You’ll also discover all the secrets of our ancestors in how they used plants, animals and barks to paint sheep’s wool and make their carpets.
We will take a tour between the most emblematic aisles of the market of Tlacolula, it is magical to be able to live with the renters of the market. Here we will try different pre-Hispanic drinks and food such as Tejate, traditional bread and chapulines (dare you try them?). If your reservation is on a Sunday, we will visit the oldest tianguis in the valley, take a tour of the entire tianguis and see how people use this day to share, market and exchange their products. Here you will truly live the culture of an Oaxacan.
And that is an Oaxacan experience without the delicious Mezcal. Matatlan, world capital of Mezcal! Here you will learn all about its distillation process to feel like a true master rocker, but above all, you will be able to try more than 8 different types of wild agaves: Cuixe, tobalá, Mexican, tepeztate, among others. We will also visit the agave field so you can see how it grows. After learning the whole process and having tasted all the types of Mezcal there is, it is time for lunch, where we will taste a traditional Oaxacan meal, which I am sure you will enjoy a lot, will be accompanied by flavor water of the day and guess what, more mezcal!
But the adventure does not end there! We are going to Mitla the town where I live, we will visit my family's clothing store and together with my mom we will take more mezcal from my own brand. And after all this day full of activities, we return to the city, not before taking a walk through the main streets of Mitla.
This time is specific to trips that contemplates the return and return of the city of Oaxaca to the places where we will be having fun! Transfer only

Awesome day. The textile experience was at a family operation and went through all the steps that were handed down from generation to generation.
Irwin is the guide and organiser of this tour. As I was the only person - indeed he would go even if I was the only one in the tour - I had a lot of informative conversations with him while he drove us to all the points of interest. Compared to the other tours I feel this one has a high personal touch.
Sid! Thnk you so much for all. I really enjoyed the adventure with you and I think now we are friends :)
This was an excellent day trip! The entire day exceeded our expectations. Our guide Irvin was a knowledgeable local with perfect English. We started by visiting a traditional weaving family in Teotilán del Valle. As an avid knitter, I really enjoyed learning how the weaver went from taking raw wool from a nearby pueblo to washing it in a basket with a native root, carding it, dyeing it with natural plants and minerals, to weaving beautiful rugs and wall hangings. I tried my hand at spinning the wool into yarn and can really appreciate the skill and the expertise of the weaver! My non-knitting husband also found the whole process very engaging. Our next stop was a palenque, where we learned about the various types of agave plants used in making mezcal, to seeing the steps involved in the making the final product. Of course, we then tasted various blends and purchased some to take home. Afterwards, the tour included lunch at the pelanque. The third stop was at the market in Tlacolula de Matamoros. We tasted (and purchased) some Chapulines, then we moved on to a tasting of delicious Tejate. Afterwards, we had some local bread with cinnamon and raisins. We were there on a Thursday, and we appreciated that it wasn't as busy as it would be on a Sunday. Our final stop was Irvin's hometown of Mitla, where we met his delightful mother in her clothing store and had a tour of the town. It was such a great day...we highly recommend this day trip!
Rachelle! Thank you so much for all. I really had a such day with great people like you and your husband ! I hope see you soon!
This was my favorite tour in Oaxaca! Irvin’s passion is contagious and it was so much fun experiencing food, mezcal and cultural traditions with his friends and family. So enjoyable I booked a follow-up tour with his cousin Cesar to visit caves near Mitla.

Our guide Irvin was very knowledgeable, very energetic, very attentive to our needs, he answered all our questions and concerns. We had a great experience and plan to book with him again in the future. Our favorite besides all the mezcal tasting was riding through Mitla's downtown in quads. He took care of pictures and videos so we could just enjoy the tour....

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Irvin, who was very personable, lively, knowledgeable, and spoke excellent English. The tour exceeded our expectations. The woman who provided the demonstration of rug making was delightful, Irvin’s leadership through the tianguis atTlacolula was superb, the Mezcal tasting demonstration was expansive, and the ride on ATV at Milka was an unusual treat. Don’t miss it!
