Nordnes: The Hidden Gem of Bergen Walking Tour

Description
Looking for a unique walking tour in Bergen that takes you away from the busy crowded areas of Bryggen and the fish market? Discover one of the best-kept secrets in the city with this walking tour of the Nordnes peninsula. Nordnes is a 1km (0.6 mile) long peninsula that stretches into Bergen harbour. While the Hanseatic League were dominating trade on Bryggen, Nordnes is where the Norwegian merchants developed their businesses. But Nordnes was also the centre of power in Bergen, and it was the city’s courthouse and execution site for hundreds of years. It's also where witches were burned in the 16th and 17th centuries. In the 19th century, it became a hub of sailors and red-light district, with the narrow, dark alleys the perfect place to hide undercover activity. Today it is a popular (and expensive) neighbourhood with families, schools, and beautiful parks. We limit the group size as this tour is through a residential neighbourhood. You ask as many questions as you want!

Itinerary
We stroll down Strandgaten, the historic main street for the Norwegian merchants. But we won't just walk down here - we'll veer off-the-beaten path for some unique views of Bergen.
We stop outside Nykirken, the church built for the merchants in the 17th century. Edvard Grieg was baptised here. But we'll also discuss the Archbishops Residence that used to be there.
After taking some secret streets in Nordnes (you'll have to take the tour to learn about them!), we end up at the halfway point, the Nordnes Park.
As we make our way back to the city, we enter one of the best-preserved neighbourhoods in Bergen. Here we'll see the culture house and surrounds.
We stop outside what has been voted the most beautiful street in Bergen.
For the last part of the tour, we head into the well-preserved sailors neighbourhood of Nostet.
Heading back into the city, we pass by Bergen's theatre.
We finish in the city centre of Bergen.

This was an excellent tour hosted by our guide Dane, who lives in the area so he was able to give us the full benefit of his local knowledge. He was enthusiastic, knowlegable and open to any questions we had. As the title says this area is a hidden gem, with so many lovely old streets and a lovely headland, very much worth a visit. Dane had many interesting stories about the history of this area. We had been in Bergen before so had seen the main sites of Bryggen etc, so it was good to be able to hear some more about a less visited but still very interesting part of Bergen. We would highly reccommend giving this area a look as it is just as interesting and less busy than the usual Bryggen area. We were especially pleased that they ran the tour for us as the two of us were the only ones on the walk, many other tours would have been cancelled if a minimum wasn't reached, so this was good customer service from I love Bergn.
Knowledgeable guide, great fun, highly recommend our guide Neil
Caoimhe showed real knowledge of and passion for the city, which was remarkable considering she has only lived there for a year. A very informative tour.
The tour lives up to the name of hidden gems. Dane was a great guide. He was informative, funny and engaging. We learned a tremendous amount about the lovely city of Bergen.
Thanks!
Really interesting tour. Our Guide Janine had a lot of knowledge. An area of Bergen worth exploring. Lots of historical facts as well as some local legend .
Thank you!
Janine was great. Friendly and knowledgeable about the area
Thank you
I enjoy strolling through parts of a city I'm visiting, so this was a welcome activity. Nordnes has some gorgeous streets that are worth wandering down, and Magda was an excellent tour guide with clear passion for the area. As I had done one other tour from this same company, she was able to skip over stories that I had already heard, so it felt like a more personal tour. Would recommend if you fancy taking in a quieter part of the city.
Thank you!
Janine was an excellent guide. Informative with deep local knowledge, perspectives as an ex pat with two decades in Bergen and an ever valuable sense of humor. Very productive and enjoyable use of time.
Thanks!
My wife and I had a great tour at Nordnes today, guided by very knowledgeable and clever Rigmor. She really has in depth insight into the history of Bergen and Nordnes, and she explains it very pedagogic. Even though I have lived at Nordnes myself, I learned a lot, and Rigmor had good answers to all questions. Thanks a lot!
Thank you!
Very well organised tours. Very good communication and quick response for any questions leading up to the tour. They also do not cancel a tour even if you are the only person who showed up. I got a private tour because others who booked did not come.
Thanks so much!
