Description
The area surrounding Nelson and Eldorado Canyon was home to the ancient Ancient Puebloan Indians, and then later to the Paiutes and Mojave tribes before Spaniards arrived in 1775. The Spaniards soon found small amounts of silver, but it wasn’t until the 1850s that large amounts of gold were found in one of the first major gold strikes in Nevada. The Nelson area is said to have yielded over 500 million dollars in ore over nearly a century. In fact the famous Techatticup Mine remained active until 1943, and produced more than 2.5 million dollars worth of gold, silver, copper, and lead.

Fantastic tour and a great experience from start to finish. Max was an excellent guide—friendly, funny, engaging, and incredibly knowledgeable. He brought the history of the area to life, explaining not only the story of El Dorado Canyon and Nelson Ghost Town, but also how they connect to the wider history and development of Las Vegas. I especially enjoyed learning about the geography of the region, the mining boom, and why Nelson played such an important role in southern Nevada’s early growth. Max answered questions with ease and shared plenty of interesting facts and stories along the way. The scenery was stunning, the history was fascinating, and Max’s enthusiasm made the whole experience even better. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Las Vegas and looking to discover a different side of Nevada beyond the Strip.
