The Mythological world inhabited by the Ancient Greeks was not one of the fairytales, but one filled with a pantheon of real Gods, who it was possible to talk to, summon up, or just meet by chance when they visited the mortal world. Bad or good decisions could lead to punishments like transformation into animals, or bestow fortune such as victory in battle. Multi-headed Hydras inhabited lakes, Centaurs lived in dark mountain caves, Griffins flew the skies, and the islands surrounding Athens were full of beasts with special powers, from Minotaur's and Sirens. No wonder the mythology of the ancient world formed part of everyday life for local Athenians who carved these beliefs into every monument for us to see today. MEETING OUR GUIDE. Your guide will be waiting at the Arch of Hadrian to meet you at your chosen time which is opposite the impressive Temple of Zeus (not entered) and you will start with the stories & myths surrounding Zeus and his influence on the citizens of Athens. Dedicated to Zeus head of the Olympian Gods, this colossal Temple pre-dates the Acropolis and is the largest ever constructed and home to one of the wonders of the ancient world; a gigantic statue of Zeus seated on a throne over 12 meters tall and encrusted with gold, ivory & Jewels. At the golden sandals of the god sat an olive oil reservoir that reflected on the statue making it appear that the god would rise up and lift of the temple roof. One can only imagine the impact it had on the visitors of the day over 2500 years before!
Most sacred site of Ancient Greece and crowned by the pinnacle of Classical Greece, the Parthenon which was richly decorated with the struggles of the gods, and the focus of the largest Athenian celebrations to the Goddess Athena. A short distance away lies the Erechtheion Temple, dedicated to both the God Poseidon and Goddess Athena who battled for the patronage of Athens. Learn of their competition, uncover the riddles of the Parthenon, the events behind the myths and the relevance of these monuments both then and now in the lives of Athenians.
ENDING YOUR TOUR. Your guide will end your tour at the Acropolis where you can continue longer on your own or enjoy the sights of the City!

ADDITIONAL BOOKING OPTION: ACROPOLIS 'GOLDEN-HOUR'. A shorter 90 Minute Private Tour focusing on the special sunlight effects on the Acropolis during the afternoon hours.
ADDITIONAL BOOKING OPTIONS: MYTHOLOGY TAILORED 3hr. If choosing this option your tour still includes the Acropolis but is extended to include a visit to one other site of your choice: a) The Ancient Agora Archaeological Site. The epicentre of Ancient Greek life in the city, this is where the Athenians came to meet, trade and discuss the politics of the day; where Philosophers such as Plato spoke, where democracy itself was founded by the citizens and where many of the most important temples and dedications to the gods were made; b) the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the largest Greek Temple of the Ancient world which was home to one of the wonders of the Ancient World; c) The Acropolis Museum, a state of the Art museum built to house the best of the finds from the nearby Acropolis along with various models, interactive exhibits and masterpieces of clasical Greece; d) The Plaka Neighbourhood, which is a mix of ancient and new, from 1000 year old Byzantine churches to charming local markets.

This was an amazing way to visit such a special place. Michael was a great guide and made the whole experience quite educational as well as philosophical (as we desired). Michael was a phenomenal tour guide. So friendly, entertaining, and knowledgeable. He really brought the ruins and museum to life. He was wonderful answering our questions with interest. We have been around the world and done so many guided history tours but this one was really different. Our Marisa was extremely learned and knowledge and such a kind human. She wen on into the depths of the history and even discussed in depths of democracy and how we see history repeating in modern world from different aspects. She also proactively guided us to pose for pics at scenic locations and honestly took better pictures with our phones than any professional photographer. This was the best history tour we took ever. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Greece. We will come back again to Athens to do the democracy history tour with this company and Marisa.

Our family had an amazing morning touring the Acropolis and Parthenon with Vicky! She was so engaging, friendly, and relatable. Vicky is incredibly knowledgeable about the history of the Acropolis, Parthenon, Temple of Athena Nike, etc. She breathes life into the mythology surrounding the Greek Gods so much so that you feel like you lived back in the 5th century BC with the ancient Greeks! Our young adult kids were fascinated, wide-eyed, and glued to Vicki’s stories. She has a wonderful sense of humor. She also showed us around old town Athens and took us to the most wonderful restaurant to sample traditional, classic Greek cuisine. The spinach pie was a slice of heaven! Vicky is an expert in navigating the crowds and knew exactly where to have us pose for the best photos of all we saw. I texted a few friends back in the USA that they have to travel to Athens and do this tour with Vicki.

“Mike” was a great guide! We chose the mythology tour for something a bit different and he delivered. So many tales directly linked to the locations visited so it made it all the more memorable.
