Take ONE backpack and It's GREAT

This is a stunning place to visit. We stayed one night at the Hotel Pierre and it was well worth the money. The views were amazing and there was just something "other worldy" about watching the tide coming in. Seeing it with tide out and tide in was great. Read and then reread the comments about TAKE ONLY ONE Light weight bag with you. First of all you have to carry the bag up VERY STEEP, narrow, slippery cobbledstone streets. Second, when the comments say steep steps inside buildings they mean STEEP, tight, narrow, uneven steps in the buildings. Third, if a hotel says "annex" - that means somewhere on the mountain and not usually near by. You know how you have to get in shape to go skiing once a year? Same thing here - you have to get in shape to visit this place. I was huffing and puffing and my knees were about to quuit - still worth it! An abbey is an abbey is what I thought and so I did the tour more to check the box than anything else but I was blown away by this abbey. Do take the tour! (When you finally get to the abbey and have gone up a million steps, take a breath, for there are more steps! Be prepared, but really worth it. Make reservations for the tour way in advance. We did tour that the abbey offers and it was great. 45 min If you stay at a hotel on the Mount overnight, you get to park (if you have a car) in P3 which is closest lot. Take a backpack if you can and don't take a rolling suitcase - they don't roll very well over the cobblestones and we saw people struggling with rolling bags.
