Meteora Monasteries Private Full Day Trip From Athens

Description
Enjoy a private trip by executive car or minivan to Meteora, the UNESCO world heritage listed monasteries. Meteora means "middle of the sky", and with their exalted heights and almost mystical inaccessibility, the Metéora monasteries seem to soar towards heaven and reflect the human striving for holiness. Pass by naturally formed caves where the first hermits lived and gaze the breathtaking views. After the fascinating tour of the 3 most accessible monasteries, you can enjoy a delightful lunch with Greek traditional dishes and “Mezedes” in the picturesque Kastraki village. On your way back to Athens, stop at Thermopylae, where one of most epic battles of all times took place. 300 Spartans faced the Persian army and stopped them for 2 days. Take photos of the statue of Leonidas and watch a small video of what exactly happened there.

Breathtakingly surreal and serenely spiritual, the Metéora monasteries spring forth from a dreamy landscape of rocky megaliths in the plains of the Thessaly Valley. The first hermits came to this far-removed corner of Greece at least as early as the 11th century to withdraw from the world and contemplate divinity. Christian Orthodox monks began building monasteries here in the 14th century. Originally 24 monasteries stood at this astonishing location, built onto the edges of vertiginous cliffs or perched on sheer sandstone formations as high as 300 meters. With their exalted heights and almost mystical inaccessibility, the Metéora monasteries seem to soar towards heaven and reflect the human striving for holiness. Please be modestly dressed. Women are suggested to wear long skirts & long sleeves. If you do not have, you will be given a skirt in your way in.

Magical day at Meteroa. Our guide Theo T was very warm and friendly, very informative and chatty so we learnt a lot about ordinary life of Athenians. Speaks v good English. Theo was good with avoiding big crowds and timed our stops perfectly. Do request for Theo T for anything Athens.

Mr. George was an absolute font of knowledge. It was a long day, but comfortable and totally worth it to see and experience all that we saw and did. The snacks were plenty and the choice for dinner was phenomenal. I highly recommend this tour.

It was approximately a little less than a four hour car ride each way, but the experience was totally worth it. Our driver Georgios was friendly and very informative, and his car was quite comfortable. He was very accommodating as far as stopping whenever we wanted for food or photo shoots at scenic locations. We visited three different monasteries, and while we had a favorite, each one was most enjoyable. The views were terrific and the monasteries were so interesting. It was a once in a lifetime experience for us, and we are very happy we decided to include this trip in our itinerary'

Going to Meteora from Athens is a time commitment, but we would say it's well worth the journey. The monasteries focus on a period of Greek history -- the 14th c. on -- that gives visitors a look at something different from the ancient. Perched on high rocks cliffs, the monasteries are spirtual and otherworldly. Any photos you or anyone takes will be a completely inadequate representation of what you see with your own eyes. Yes, the drive there and back takes a long time, but the countryside reminded us a lot of Southern California and is pretty to look at.
