London Theatre: Oh, Mary!

Description
Oh, Mary! is an uproariously dark comedy about a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Unrequited yearning, alcoholism, and suppressed desires abound in this 80-minute one-act play that finally examines the forgotten life and dreams of Mrs. Lincoln, through the lens of an idiot (playwright Cole Escola). Declared “one of the best comedies in years” by The New York Times, Oh, Mary! received Tony Awards for Best Leading Actor in a Play (Cole Escola) and Best Direction of a Play (Sam Pinkleton). For 8 weeks only, the inimitable Cole Escola will reprise their Tony Award winning performance as Mary Todd Lincoln, followed by Mason Alexander Park (The Sandman, Cabaret) from 26 January.

This was genuinely painful to sit through. The plot was thin and the script relied exclusively on overacting and predictable and juvenile vulgarity to get laughs rather than genuine wit.
I’m afraid to say, I the found this performance contrived . The humour wasn’t clever, in fact it wasn’t even funny. Very pantomime-ish with lots of shouting and exaggerated over acting. I wasn’t expecting anything high brow but this was puerile. Silly school boy jokes about sex and bodily functions. I was mostly bored
The humour is crass and basic and I felt it was overacted with unnecessary shouting. We couldn’t sit through the whole thing and left halfway through - which was a first for me. If you like very obvious sexual jokes, you might like it but if you’re looking for intelligent, witty humour you will not find it here.
Catherine Tate was absolutely outstanding. Her performance carried the show from start to finish and she brought huge energy, humour and charisma to the role. She was genuinely funny and had the audience laughing throughout. The production wasn't quite what I expected. It felt like a very 'Punch and Judy' style comedy rather than the heroine's story I had hoped for. While I appreciated the satire and absurdity, the overall story didn't resonate with me as much as the lead performance. That said, Catherine Tate is worth the visit. Even when the material wasn't entirely for me, she was a joy to watch.
So funny ! Great acting.dark humour ..go with an open mind.
Hilarious from start to end. Fabulous play.
"Oh, Mary!" transferred to London. I had seen it in New York and wanted to see if they made any changes for a British audience. The only change I noticed was the introductory narration. In London, Mason Alexander Park played Mary. His interpretation was different than writer Cole Escola's, but was very good. Mary was played as a repressed cabaret singer in the show. As a finale, she performs her cabaret act. The last time I saw Mason Alexander Park, he was playing the emcee in the immersive revival of "Cabaret". The is alternative history. Enjoy the absurdity.
Hilarious, raunchy, and fun! I was so excited to see this show during my trip to London. It did not disappoint and I had the best time. Highly recommend!
Fantastic performance from Mason Alexander Park, loved the energy, endless clever changes of facial expression and voice. Really hilarious from beginning to end. Don’r expect serious theatre - If you go prepared for it to be very silly you will enjoy it!
. I loved it! Mason Alexander Park's Mary is amazing, the rest of the cast are fantastic but it's all about Mary. The jokes are crude, the timing is perfect, just a wonderful night out
