Itinerary
On our journey towards the locations featured in A Christmas Carol we will take in some other Dickens sights. Let's explore the area where Dicken's worked as a junior Clerk. From the mysterious Inns of Court he took inspiration that would later find it's way in to David Copperfield, Great Expectations, and Martin Chuzzlewit.
A Tavern with Cellars dating to the 13th Century. This Pub was a haunt of Dickens and a meeting place for the Hellfire Club. David Copperfield drinks here in the Novel of the same name. Shall we rest by the fire and warm up with some Mulled Wine?
Right next to the Bank of England, the Royal Exchange is where the Ghost of Christmas yet to come takes Scrooge to see his colleagues discussing his funeral. The steps of the Exchange are the traditional spot where Royal announcements are made. Today you can cross the trading floor, but the bankers are long gone. Now designer shops, and Champagne bars attract the visitors attention.
Let's get off the beaten path and head deep into the world of Ebeneezer Scrooge and 'A Christmas Carol' as we visit Scrooge's Counting House, the place where he took supper on Christmas Eve, and Charles Dickens favourite Chop House the George and Vulture. If Dickens was on this tour with us, he would be able to go in to the George and Vulture, find his favourite table, and even order his favourite meal. Not a lot has changed. This atmospheric old tavern was the meeting place of the Pickwick Club and is mentioned over 20 times in the Pickwick Papers. The equally unchanged Tavern round the corner, Simpsons is most likely Scrooge's favourite eating spot. Your guide will explain why!
One of Charles Dickens favorite restaurants and Chop Houses. Mr Pickwick and his famous Club met here. As did the notorious Hellfire Club. The interior of this fine establishment is unchanged since the time of Dickens.
Was this Scrooges Dismal Tavern?
In recent years this beautiful market has been used in the Harry Potter Films. But Charles Dickens used this location in A Christmas Carol. It was here that Scrooge sent the boy to fetch the largest Turkey on Christmas morning when he awoke as a reformed man.

What a delightful tour. Richard was an outstanding guide and shared a wealth of information about Dickens and his life in London. A Christmas Carol came to life as he wove the story together with actual London sites. Great tour especially at Christmas time. The tour time was a bit longer than noted only because Richard took the time to stop if people on the tour needed a quick break or wanted to stop for photos at one of the iconic phonebooths. And the old church/now turned into a coffee house was quite an interesting place for a quick break as well as Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Pub! Highly recommend this tour for a most interesting tour of old London.
Such a wonderful review! Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. A pleasure to meet you and I hope you had a wonderful holiday season. Many thanks again.
Richard Chambers led our group on a fact-filled tour of the locales in the life of Charles Dickens, and their influence on his works. He let us in on the real-life people and places that shaped the locations and people in his stories with the skill of a true detective. If you want to know, you have to take the tour with him! Ps give this guy a raise!
Thank you so much Linda! So happy you enjoyed the tour, it was a pleasure to meet you and to show you around this truly ancient part of London. I also hope the rest of the holiday season was really wonderful. Thanks again!
Richard is a very knowledgeable guide. He was fluent in Charles Dickens. We are glad we did it. It was perfect for the Christmas season.
Thank you so much for the great review. A pleasure to meet you, and I hope the rest of the trip was just as pleasurable! Many thanks.
Amazing tour and Richard was phenomenal in his storytelling. Taking the time to set the table and bring everything together was simply wonderful. He took us to different places that we would have never known or seen on our own. You don’t have to be a fan of Dickens to appreciate this tour. I am a fan, especially of A Christmas Carol. What even made it better was Richard talked about certain aspects of the story and showed how each place chosen for the tour was unique. It was almost like a treasure hunt! I’ve taken walking tours before, but this one was the best! Take the tour, learn about the history and culture behind the stories. SO MUCH FUN! Richard I do hope you will be on YouTube! Oh, one more thing…he showed a bonus site for the series Slow Horses! We love that show!
Thank you so much! What a great review. I'm so pleased you enjoyed your tour and I hope the rest of your trip was equally as memorable. Thank you so much again!
