I would not recommend this tour, especially for solo female travelers. I did a private tour today with Smiles. The tour was originally supposed to last around two hours, but it ended up taking almost 3. While I didn’t mind spending extra time exploring, what happened at the end of the tour left me feeling extremely uncomfortable and disappointed. After the tour, Smiles suggested stopping at a local restaurant for lunch before driving back. Everything seemed fine. He ordered his own meal and drink, and I ordered mine. However, when the bill arrived, I paid for my food, and he simply ignored the remainder of the bill. The restaurant staff then had to come after him to remind him that there was still an outstanding balance. At that point, he looked at me and said that he thought I would be paying. This was the first time anything like that had been mentioned. I was completely caught off guard and immediately told him that I had not been informed that I would be expected to pay for his meal. Nevertheless, I was put in a very awkward position. As a woman traveling alone, I felt embarrassed, pressured, and uncomfortable challenging him further, especially knowing that I still had to ride back in the car with him. In the end, I felt forced into paying for his food, despite already having paid for the tour itself, which was not inexpensive. The situation felt highly inappropriate and unprofessional. The drive back was uncomfortable and mostly silent. Later, he asked if I was upset because I had paid for his meal. I told him that of course I was upset. It was unfair to expect a customer to cover a guide’s personal food expenses without any prior discussion or agreement. I am happy to support local communities and local guides, but there is a significant difference between voluntarily offering a gesture of appreciation and being unexpectedly pressured into paying for someone else’s meal. What should have been a pleasant experience ended on a very negative note. Because of this incident, I cannot recommend this tour or this guide, particularly for women traveling alone who may find themselves in similarly uncomfortable situations.
True gem of an experience for everyone who wants to peek behind the curtain of polished tourism sites and “nice” attractions. Together with Don we were able to experience life in Langa Township, learn about its history as well as gain a deeper understanding of the community itself. Don is a true champ. Enthusiastic. Knowledgeable. And it feels like roaming the street with a “friend” that happens to provide you with insights into what you are seeing. Plus, you can ask him anything! Cannot recommend this tour highly enough. It’s respectful. It’s safe. And above all, it’s proper fun! 10/10 experience.
Interesting experience that gave insight into the history and local township communities of Cape Town. This was a unique experience that I would recommend to those looking for a different perspective on life in Cape Town. We were able to visit an orphanage and pre-school which was quite interesting. Langa is definitely one of the few townships trying to bring awareness to their situation and to hopefully improve the standard of living by introducing tourism.
We found it an enrichment to visit the township. Don was our guide and helped us understand the township in a fun way. Then we had a delicious lunch with local food in the township.
This was an incredibly impressive tour through Langa Township. Our excellent guide, Loyiso, gave us many fascinating and thought-provoking insights. I can highly recommend this tour. It changes the way you look at townships by offering a very authentic perspective and the opportunity to engage directly with people in the community. Most importantly, it supports the local community itself. At first, I was quite skeptical and wondered whether a tour like this might feel voyeuristic. It turned out to be the complete opposite. It was respectful, meaningful, and genuinely eye-opening. A truly outstanding experience.
Very interesting, close up, seemingly authentic tour that gave us a lot of impressions and insights into Langa’s history, population, changes, everyday life, creative scene etc. Loyiso was an excellent, knowledgeable und sympathetic guide. Much appreciated and highly recommended!
Great tour guide Don led us through Langa Township and explained the history of the Township. He had grown up there and provided his unique perspective. Time was well spent and tour length was good. Tour felt very respectful and not exploitive.
A must-see experience!! If you leave Cape Town without seeing Langa, you have not seen the whole story of this place. The tour was equal parts informative and inspiring. I have studied Apartheid and still learned new things! It truly has a different feel than the rest of Cape Town. Even though we went on a rainy day, it was worth the trip. With an umbrella and tennis shoes, it was no trouble at all. The artists, workers, and residents we met were kind. This tour is doing the great work of uplifting Langa, hosting visitors, and empowering Langa residents to create their own narratives and boost their economy. Amazing experience that I recommend to everyone!!
Our guide Nisa (sp?) was very personable and gave us authentic firsthand experience and stories of growing up in and currently living in this Township. I highly recommend this experience to go beyond the outside walls of a township have feet on the ground and learn the history as well as current everyday life in Langa
Superb immersive experience that is a must to understand History with a capital H. Thanks to Nela for explaining so many things to us and sharing her beliefs. An unforgettable memory!
