Begin along Shijo Street, one of Kyoto’s main thoroughfares and a natural gateway into Gion. Lined with a mix of traditional storefronts and modern shops, it marks the transition between the contemporary city and the historic district.
Walk along Hanamikoji Street, one of Gion’s most recognizable streets, where traditional wooden machiya houses line the way. The preserved architecture and calm atmosphere reflect a district that continues to maintain long-standing cultural practices.
Continue to the Shirakawa Canal, a quieter part of Gion known for its carefully preserved setting. Stone paths, willow trees, and low wooden buildings create a landscape that reflects Kyoto’s historical character and attention to detail.
Visit Yasaka Shrine, an important Shinto site with deep ties to the surrounding district. It has long played a central role in Kyoto’s seasonal festivals and continues to serve as a place of daily worship and cultural significance.

Requested english speaking guide. Guide spoke broken english The language barrier created a very bad experience.
Hello Kevin, We understand how important clear communication is during a hosted experience, and we sincerely apologise that the host’s language level did not meet your expectations. This is not the standard we aim to provide, and we are taking this seriously to help prevent it from happening again. Our Global Host Manager has already addressed this internally with the host. Your feedback is very valuable in helping us improve, and we would truly appreciate the opportunity to show you the vibrant, well-prepared experience you should have received. Warm regards, Sheenah and the City Unscripted team
We had a wonderful tour. Our guide Austen showed us around hidden alleys with cool spots. He helped us spot a few rare geisha sightings and at the end of the tour, he helped us find a fun restaurant for dinner. He was also super helpful with recommending other things to see and places to eat.
We're delighted to hear that Austen helped you discover hidden corners of the city and made your experience so enjoyable. From spotting geisha in the historic streets to recommending a great dinner spot and sharing local tips, it’s fantastic to know he helped make your visit memorable. We’ll be sure to pass along your kind words to Austen. We hope to welcome you on another adventure soon!
Lots of walking in gion/geisha district. Very informative although it’s a very busy area and difficult to navigate
Thank you for your feedback. We're delighted to hear that you found the experience informative and enjoyed exploring the Gion district with your host. We appreciate your understanding and are glad you were able to experience the unique atmosphere and cultural charm of the geisha district.
Even though it was absolutely pouring rain, Pam greeted us with the biggest smile and the warmest energy. She happily took us through Gion and the geisha districts, sharing incredible stories and so much history along the way. We learned more in a few hours than we ever expected. Her personality was a beam of light on a very wet evening - kind, patient, and full of life. Pam made our Kyoto experience unforgettable.

If I could give this tour ten stars I would. Our tour guide, Shaan, took us through Gion on a magical tour. She was so considerate of us and taught us so much about the neighborhoods. We had fun and learned so much about Gion. We learned about the geisha and even were fortunate enough to see 3 junior and senior geishas on the streets as we toured the district. We throughly enjoyed ourselves as we walked the Gion district, seeing local highlights like teahouses, several Shrines and eateries. We are glad we booked this tour.
Moments like that make the district especially magical. We truly appreciate your recommendation and are so pleased you enjoyed the experience from start to finish.
I hope you’re lucky enough to get Pam to show you around the Gion district. Her enthusiasm and knowledge of the area really made the experience special for us. Her English is perfect and she was very accommodating re: where to meet us and where we wanted to end the tour. She tailored the tour to what interested us the most including taking us to a couple of speciality stores after I mentioned wanting to buy a souvenir. We’ll never forget our great tour with Pam.
It’s fantastic to hear how much you enjoyed your time in Gion with Pam, and that her enthusiasm, knowledge, and flexibility made the experience so special for you. We’re especially glad to hear that she was able to tailor the experience to your interests and help you find the perfect souvenirs — those personal touches really make a difference.
We choose a personal tour because we wanted to take our time to enjoy the local history of the area and the sights without having to keep up with a larger group of people.. Jose met us where we chose and took us through the busier areas as well as quieter streets. He was knowledgeable about the history as well as some of the lesser known facts and myths. We walked a lot in the two hours but never felt rushed. It’s well worth spending the money to get a tour personally catered to what and where you want to go. Jose did a great job entertaining us with stories as well as fun facts.
We’re so glad you enjoyed a relaxed and personalized way of discovering the area at your own pace! It’s wonderful to hear the mix of history, hidden details, and storytelling made it so engaging — thank you for sharing this.
Emi our guild was brilliant, very impressive with her knowledge, we learnt so much information, she was amazing

I had trouble falling in love with Kyoto at first after a bad experience getting here. Alexis helped me get past this and made me fall in love with this historic capital. He was an informative, engaging and funny tour guide. Funniest of all was that shrine for the bad relationships. Letting me discover info along the way for myself, like the crawling ritual, the rabbit god and the great pagoda were great touches. He was also an amazing photographer. Thank you, Alexis for selling me the great city of Kyoto! Cheers and all the best.
Alexis passion, humor, and unique storytelling really do make the city come alive, and it sounds like the shrine for bad relationships was a memorable highlight! We’re especially happy that you enjoyed discovering hidden gems and rituals along the way, and appreciated Alexis’s photography skills too. He’ll be thrilled to know he helped you fall in love with Kyoto. Thank you so much for sharing your experience! Wishing you all the best on your travels!
