Chartwell was Churchill’s house in Kent and is now preserved as an historic property by the National Trust. It is consistently one of their most visited sites. The house was purchased by Winston Churchill in 1922 and he used it as his main base during the ‘20s and ‘30s for writing, painting and entertaining. It was a significant drain on his finances until it was purchased for the Trust by a group of Churchill’s friends and admirers in 1946, on condition that Churchill and his wife could continue to live there for their lifetimes. Lady Churchill presented it to the Trust immediately after Churchill’s death in 1965.

Itinerary not possible

The description is misleading, as you cannot do the entire itinerary listed. If you want to see the cliffs of Dover, you will be in the car for half of your 9 hours and have no time to see anything else. The driver is your typical airport transfer driver and does not have any local knowledge. After dozing in the back of the car for a while, we arrived in the middle of a field and he asked if this is where we wanted to go - turns out the tour company gave him the middle of the Kent postcode as a 'destination'. After some phone calls to India, he ended dropping us off in Canterbury, then on to Leeds. He pointed out that we would miss Chartwell if we took more than 45 minutes at Leeds castle, which we did.

We did A LOT in 9 hours!!

Ahmed was a great guide. He was prompt, kind and genuine. Very knowledgeable of the city and beyond!! For future explorers: we misunderstood the description of this tour and thought we were seeing Chartwell, Canterbury, Dover cliffs and Leeds in one go. You have to choose because between Dover and central London, it’s a 4 hour round trip and your 9 hours is already cut in half. Ahmed took us to everything he could, quick city tour, Chartwell, Leeds and the Cliffs. He knew all the tricks to get the best views and photos. You could spend hours at each of those places but we were hustling and doing the whistle stop!!

Kent with Chartwell

We had a nine hour experience, exploring Kent, including Chartwell, Dover and Canterbury. The experience at Chartwell and Canterbury were especially enjoyable. Our God was great and knowledgeable, and we were recommended for anyone.
