Sengan-en is a Japanese style stately home and landscape garden along the coast north of downtown Kagoshima. Sengan-en was built in 1658 as one of the residences of the powerful Shimadzu clan. One of the garden's most striking features is its use of active volcano Sakurajima and Kagoshima Bay as borrowed scenery. The gardens cover 50,000 square meters and include calming ponds, bubbling streams, mysterious shrines, a bamboo grove, and a mountain hiking trail. Visit Tsurugane Shrine and pray to become more beautiful, or the unusual Cat Shrine and pray for the health and longevity of your feline friend! The expansive house provides a glimpse into the lifestyle of one of Japan’s most influential feudal lords, and hosted Edward VIII of the UK and Nicholas II of Russia among others. See the rooms that the lord spent his daily life in and enjoy the view of the gardens and scenery beyond as only a samurai lord could.

This spot commands a picturesque view of Kagoshima City and the calm waters of Kinko Bay. The night brings a beautiful view in which the pitch dark of Mt. Sakurajima contrasts with the lights of Kagoshima City. Taking inspiration from the name Sakurajima (cherry blossom island), the roof over the observation deck is shaped like a cherry blossom petal.

Pass by

The observatory is located along a 1-km trail on a small hill in the lava field created by the great 1946 eruption. From here there is a clear view of impressive Sakurajima, the world famous active volcano, and Kinko Bay. As the observatory is close to the crater of the steep, cone shaped South Peak, you may hear roaring or explosive sounds from the crater that give quite a different impression of Sakurajima.

Chiran Samurai Residence Complex Nicknamed the "Little Kyoto of Satsuma", Chiran is home to more than 500 samurai residences during the late Edo period (19th century). As the original buildings of the complex are well-preserved, one can get to witness a real, Edo Period Samurai settlement here. The charm of the Chiran Samurai Residence Complex lies in the 700m stonewall-lined paths, the scattered Samurai houses and the beautifully landscaped gardens within. Built with defense purposes in mind, the paths are neither too wide nor too narrow, and there are many corners and bents to reduce visibility (of potential invaders). Furthermore, the hedges (behind the stone walls of the houses) are pruned in such a way that one inside the house can see the outside clearly, but not the other way round. As such, it is possible to ambush invaders with arrows and spears without exposing one's location.

Kirishima Jingu Shrine’s Main Hall, Shinden Hall and Worship Hall were designated national treasures by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology on February 9, 2022. This marks the first time a cultural asset in Kagoshima Prefecture has received a national treasure designation for its architecture. Located in Kirishima City, Kirishima Jingu Shrine sits on a slope on the hillside of Mt. Kirishima, its buildings facing the summit of Mt. Takachiho. The current shrine was built in 1715 by the feudal lord of the then-Kagoshima domain. In bestowing the recognition, the Japanese government’s Agency for Cultural Affairs praised the composition of the shrine buildings, which takes advantage of the difference in elevation, and the stunning decorations throughout the shrine complex. In front of the main shrine are ryubashira (dragons carved into pillars), which are known as “dragon pillars” and are unique to southern Kyushu.

One of our favorite tours in Japan

An absolutely incredible experience from start to finish with our tour guide Tada, translator Toshi, and our wonderful driver. From the very first communication and booking process through the end of the tour and even the thoughtful follow-up thank you email afterward with pictures—everything was seamless, organized, and exceptionally well planned. Tada and Toshi were incredibly kind, warm, welcoming, and attentive to every detail. I was traveling with my parents in their seventies and my two children, ages 8 and 5, and they made sure every single person felt comfortable, cared for, and included throughout the entire day. Their patience, genuine care, and thoughtful planning made the experience truly special for our whole family. Our Kagoshima tour was unforgettable. We began with the sand bath experience, which was wonderful and very comfortable with private changing rooms and shower facilities. Afterwards, we enjoyed a fantastic soba noodle-making class at a lovely restaurant. Making the noodles together, watching them be prepared, and then sharing a delicious lunch was such a memorable experience that everyone enjoyed. We ended the day with a peaceful stroll through the Samurai gardens, enjoying the beautiful surroundings and traditional green tea. Throughout the entire tour, Tada and Toshi shared so much knowledge and insight, making each place we visited even more meaningful. The handouts he thoughtfully prepared for us were such a special touch and helped us follow along with the day’s plans while keeping wonderful memories of our experience. I truly cannot recommend this tour enough. The attention to detail, communication, kindness, and hospitality shown by Tada, Toshi, and our driver went above and beyond. We are so grateful for the incredible memories they helped create for our family, and we would absolutely love to return to Kagoshima again on our next family vacation.

PAID FOR AN ENGLISH TOUR GUIDE WHO COULDN’T SPEAK OR UNDERSTAND ENGLISH!!!!

We booked this tour and paid $1500AU and then was also expected to pay for ferry costs and lunch for the tour guide. We came back almost 2 hours early because the tour guide could not speak English (which is what we paid for ) and it was extremely frustrating and disappointing visiting places and not knowing the history. We should have done the tour independently and it would have been far better NEVER AGAIN

Wonderful day in Kagoshima

We loved our day with Cozy! She was so great about teaching us about Kagoshima and keeping our kids entertained throughout the day. We were lucky enough to do the ibusuki sand baths, udon noodle making, with an extra stop for ice cream, and then finished at the beautiful Sengan-en. We were picked up from the airport and dropped off at our hotel, making arrangement so easy. They even waited for us to buy snacks after our flight. We left the day energized and happy and loved reliving the day through all of the pictures Tada captured!

Pro Guides

I contacted Tada-san several months before our trip in connection with two separate trips to Kyushu. One for the Kumamoto/Mount Aso area and another for Kagoshima. In both cases, we traded emails and WhatsApp messages to discuss the itinerary for one-day tours (10 am to 4 pm). We were planning to say at onsen-centered hotels in the mountains and realized it would be difficult to set up day time itineraries having not rented cars. Both day tours were enjoyable and very comfortable. The tours will include a licensed driver, a rented vehicle (Alphard/Mercedes C200) and a government licensed guide. In both tours, we spend very pleasant times in the car talking about our diverse backgrounds. Tachi-san has a very pleasant and easy-going character. Tada-san in contrast is the constant planner - adjusting stops and itineraries so times are met, sites are seen and stomachs are filled. Even when we were not on tour with them, Tada-san also gave very helpful guidance in terms of transportation and where to go even when we were traveling or sight-seeing on our own. I think if you are not a Japanese speaker and you don't want to deal with the details and logistics of planning, a very easy short-cut will be to contact Tada-san. The cost of the tour can be "not insubstantial", but I think that's more a reflecting of the fact that transportation and labor costs in Japan are generally very high, and in return you get very professional, efficient service.

Operator response

Thank you very much for your thoughtful and detailed review. It was truly our pleasure to assist you with both your visit to the Kumamoto / Mount Aso area and your time in Kagoshima. We are especially grateful for your kind words regarding the planning, flexibility, and overall comfort of the tours. We always strive to make travel in rural Japan smooth and manageable, particularly for guests who prefer not to handle the logistics themselves. Your recognition of the effort that goes into transportation and coordination in Japan is deeply appreciated. We sincerely hope to welcome you back to Kyushu in the future.
