Ohori Park is a beautiful urban oasis in Fukuoka, centered around a large scenic pond. Enjoy a 2 km walking path, traditional Japanese garden, and the Fukuoka Art Museum. It's a perfect spot for jogging, boating, or simply relaxing by the water.

30 min

Experience one of Japan's most important shrines, dedicated to the god of learning. Admire the stunning architecture and cross a symbolic bridge for purification. The lively street to the shrine offers famous Umegae Mochi rice cakes, a must-try local treat.

A striking modern building just a walk from Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. Unlike other museums focused on Japanese art, this one highlights Japan's rich cultural exchange with the rest of Asia. See history in a broader context through its impressive, large-scale exhibits.

30 min

As Kyushu's largest station, Hakata Station is more than a transport hub. It's a destination itself, featuring the huge JR Hakata City complex with stores like Tokyu Hands, and a rooftop garden with a shrine. A foodies' paradise, offering famous tonkotsu ramen and local souvenirs.

30 min

Voted one of the world's best, Fukuoka Airport's top feature is its incredible convenience. It's just a 5-minute subway ride to Hakata's city center. Enjoy a huge variety of local and international food, including a "Ramen Runway" with famous shops.

30 min

Affectionately called "O-kushida-san" by locals, this is the guardian shrine of Hakata. It's the heart of the famous Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival, and you can see one of the massive, ornate festival floats displayed here year-round. A must-see for Hakata culture.

Known for the Fukuoka Daibutsu, Japan's largest wooden seated Buddha statue at 10.8 meters tall. The temple was founded in 806 by the famous monk Kobo Daishi (Kukai). Don't miss the unique and fascinating "Hell and Paradise" panorama you can walk through under the statue.

30 min

Claiming to be the oldest of all Sumiyoshi shrines in Japan, this tranquil oasis in the city is dedicated to the gods of the sea. Admire its rare, ancient style of architecture, a straight-lined design that predates many other shrine types. It's a peaceful escape and a look into Japan's deep history.

30 min

Nicknamed "Tenchika," this is no ordinary underground mall. It's designed in a stunning 19th-century European style with stained glass and ironwork. A great place to shop for fashion and souvenirs away from the heat or rain, it directly connects to the subway and major department stores.

30 min

Known as "Hakata's Kitchen," this traditional covered market has served locals for over a century. It's the best place to see fresh, local Fukuoka produce, especially seafood. Explore the narrow alley, try fresh sashimi or other delicacies from the small stalls, and experience an authentic local vibe.

Soaring 234 meters, Fukuoka Tower is the city's landmark for panoramic views. The observation deck offers a stunning 360-degree look at the city, Hakata Bay, and mountains. Its unique mirrored exterior and beautiful seasonal illuminations at night make it a must-visit spot, day or night.

Admission not included30 min

A short ferry ride from the city, Nokonoshima is a beautiful natural escape in Hakata Bay. It's famous for Nokonoshima Island Park, which features vast, stunning fields of seasonal flowers like cosmos and poppies. Enjoy panoramic ocean views and a relaxing day away from the urban hustle.

An excellent tour from our Cruise Ship 🚢

We had the best day on this tour with our guide Aki. Aki is such a lovely man, really kind and considerate and has a wonderful knowledge of the area and all of the sights that we saw. It was great travelling on public transport with him and also we had a fun lunch stop on his recommendation. I would highly recommend this tour. A tip for ladies is you need to have shoulders and knees covered at the Buddha statue but they do sell cover ups there cheaply.

Charm, maturity and insight - Spirit of Fukuoka

Our mature guide, Morrie gave us a profound appreciation of how Buddhism has influenced Japanese everyday life, and yet it is underpinned by the unique reverence and spirituality of Japan. Morrie crafted a 4 hour tour of Fukuoka and Hakata that was well paced and sensitively adapted to the physical limitations of an older couple aged 69 and 73 respectively. Morrie had excellent English communication skills and his extensive tour guide experience both within Japan and many overseas locations enabled him to develop a cheerful and interested rapport from the start. Overall this tour was a highlight of our 28 day Westerdam cruise in Asia.

Fabulous tour with Morry

Great half-day tour with the extraordinary Morry: superb historian, great guide—and amazing magician to boot! Never a dull moment in between visit to Japanese gardens, the astonishing reclining Buddha at Nanzoin Temple, historic Tochoji Temple, magic tricks, and a lovely break for matcha tea overlooking a local pond/park. Morry is so knowledgeable and personable. It was a delight to share time with this superior guide; only wish we could have spent more time here and with him!
