Itinerary
Founded in the early 9th century by the Buddhist monk Kukai, Tochoji is one of Fukuoka’s most important temples. Visitors can admire its striking five-story pagoda and explore the main hall that houses a massive wooden Buddha statue, one of the largest seated wooden Buddhas in Japan. The temple grounds offer a calm space in the city, blending history, art, and spirituality, and it is an ideal place to start your discovery of Fukuoka’s cultural heritage.
Kushida Shrine is known as the guardian shrine of Hakata and is deeply tied to the city’s traditions, including the famous Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival. Within its grounds, you can see beautifully decorated festival floats on display year-round, ornate wooden carvings, and a sacred ginkgo tree said to be more than a thousand years old. This shrine offers a glimpse into the spiritual life and enduring traditions of the local people.
The Hakata Machiya Hometown Museum offers an engaging look into the daily life and traditions of Fukuoka during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Housed in restored merchant townhouses, the museum showcases crafts such as Hakata-ori textiles and traditional dolls, along with exhibits on festivals and local culture. Visitors can step inside recreated living spaces, see artisans at work, and experience the atmosphere of old Hakata. This stop provides an authentic cultural encounter that complements the temples and shrines nearby.
The Fukuoka Red Brick Culture Center, built in 1909, is a Western-style architectural gem in the heart of Tenjin. Originally a bank, the building now serves as a cultural landmark, showcasing elegant brickwork and Renaissance-style design. It offers a glimpse into Fukuoka’s modernization era and provides excellent photo opportunities against its striking red-brick façade.
