We purchased our 2pm tour with the expectation that the tour would be guided by a docent. We arrived early and the reception/cashier desk was extremely busy. It was not made clear to us that we were on our own to explore so we waited awhile for our tour to begin. While the woman behind the counter was welcoming and informative, she should have explained to us upon arrival that the tour was unguided. We did enjoy exploring the museum and learning more about Edward Hopper and his artistic gift.
I apologize for that occurrence as we strive to give full and engaging experiences, and usually do. We also have new staff under training, and I will make point of speaking with the person on that day. If you are making plans to come again or for program, , please reach out to me as I will give you an added discount.
This is an absolutely wonderful window into a very important American painter. Yes, it's small....but the videos, history, exhibits, and art are spectacular. To see Hopper's letters, paintings, sketches, bikes, working materials, bedroom and all...and look out on the Hudson River he loved and see the very places he sketched is a rare opportunity. The story told here is compelling - funny sketches to his wife, letters to friends, his childhood bedroom. Also, wonderful exhibits from other painters. All in a charming neighborhood only too blocks from great bakeries, coffee shops, restaurants, bars, thrift stores and more....not to be missed.
Wonderful and informative; especially enjoyed chatting with Eileen! Thanks for the long video. It really was excellent.
We had an incredible visit to this beautiful artist’s home! Loved the tour, especially our guide, Eileen, who was so knowledgeable and passionate and had so much passion information! Would highly recommend a visit!
We had such a great experience. The two attendants were delightful. We'd purchased the tickets online before leaving Nova Scotia and the day of our visit we were running quite late. I called and was reassured that we would be able to use our tickets. It was convenient to be able to easily access the phone number. The house was lovely. Afternoon light in the Hopper bedroom gave it real personality and we could picture him painting there. The artwork displayed was interesting. I was able to take some great pictures as a reminder of this visit. The attendant who gave us directions to coffee and books in Nyack gave us great tips on navigating the town. We appreciate everything!
I’ve been to the Whitney Museum in New York City many times, and Edward Hopper’s work has always been my favorite. So when I had the chance to visit Nyack, I wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to check out this small museum on Broadway, it is the actual house where Edward Hopper was born and raised. Just a heads-up: you won’t find any of his famous paintings hanging here. Instead, you’ll get a glimpse into Hopper's life and the environment that helped shape one of America’s greatest artists. You’ll have the chance to stand in his childhood bedroom, see original sketches, his self-portrait, his personal bicycle, and some family photographs. The woman at the front desk was incredibly kind, passionate, knowledgeable, and professional. She really added to the experience. I definitely recommend visiting this little museum, it’s absolutely worth it.
What a great museum for those who appreciate Hopper's work. To be in the home where his journey began felt like a beautiful way to get to know another aspect of the artist. Eileen, who was there to greet us and provide insight into the artist and the exhibit, was absolutely lovely! Highly recommend it to all those who appreciate art!
Our experience at the Edward Hopper house was really great - the gal who took our tickets gave us a very great tour and made us appreciate Edward Hopper's art even more, now that we have a better understanding of his roots. thanks for the experience!!
Not much open to see. Would've loved to see more rooms in the home of the artist. The art was beautiful.
I am sorry to read you did not find your experience as fully engaging as we wish to deliver. Yes, this historic 1858 residence is small, but we like to think of it as jewel like. Rather than being a period room house as the artist lived here (few household objects remained when the residence was saved from demolition in the late 1960s), we seek to offer visitors a unique glimpse into Hopper's early life and influences in Nyack. I am glad you enjoyed the art showcased of Hopper's early works and the current exhibition of contemporary art inspired by his legacy. We look forward to you coming back through Nyack to visit again.
Small but powerful museum well layed out and full of Edward Hopper’s early history. The lady who works there was really nice and knowledgeable and gave us a personal tour. The historical movie was very interesting as well.
Thank you for visiting and for your lovely comments, and sharing your experience here.
