Debela Peč Hike: Panoramic Julian Alps & Lake Bled Views

Description

Rising to 2,014 meters, Debela Peč is one of the most accessible yet rewarding summits in the Julian Alps — and one of the few where a full 360-degree panorama unfolds at the top with relatively little effort. In just about 3 hours of hiking, you'll pass through spruce forest and alpine meadows before emerging onto the open summit, where on clear days the views stretch from Triglav and the Julian Alps across the Karavanke Ridge and down to Lake Bled. Along the way, stop at the cozy Lipanca mountain hut — a classic Slovenian alpine refuge where you can refuel with local food and drinks before the final push to the top (own expense). Led by a certified mountain guide in a small group of no more than 8, with hotel pickup, National Park fees, and transport all included, this is the most rewarding way to experience the Slovenian Alps without needing any prior mountaineering experience. Suitable for active families and beginners alike.

Important Information

  • Service animals allowed
  • Public transportation options are available nearby
  • Travelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness
  • Children must be accompanied by an adult
  • Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate layers as temperatures at 2,014 meters can be significantly cooler than in Bled. Sturdy ankle-support hiking boots are strongly recommended — trail shoes or sneakers are not suitable for the rocky summit terrain.
  • Bring at least 1.5 liters of water per person. The Lipanca mountain hut midway offers food and drinks for purchase, but there are no facilities on the upper trail or summit.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses are essential at altitude even on cloudy days. A light rain jacket is recommended as mountain weather can change quickly.

Amazing views of the Julian Alps

This was such an amazing hike with my guide Aleksandra. I booked as a solo traveller so was worried that the trip wouldn’t go ahead if others didn’t book too, however they still took me alone. So I got a private tour! Aleksandra had such passion and knowledge of the Julian alps and a respect for nature in general. I felt very at ease with her and enjoyed my experience a lot! Every view was breathtaking- from the pine forests, to the meadow plane and Rocky Mountain. We even encountered some snow! Aleksandra had hiking poles and spikes for my shoes that I could borrow which helped a lot! The stop in the mountain hut was an authentic Slovenia experience with local families also enjoying a rest and food. I had some sausage and stew - very tasty! The manager even supplied us with a local pine schnapps or two which was a brilliant reward following the hike! I recommend this trip for anyone who wants to get a close up view of the Julian Alps. The hike was not too strenuous, but was a little steep at times. Bring layers to wear as it gets hot on one side of the mountain, and windy on the other! Definitely need good hiking boots.

Wonderful views and great company

I was lucky to have had Alex take us on another tour equally great the 7 wonders tour. This climb was equally wonderful and Alex as before was very kind and very helpful. We come from a very flat part of the UK and haven't got experience doing this sort of activity especially with hiking poles. Alex throughout gave us confidence and guidance especially on the descent. I highly recommend this outdoor activity company.

Operator response

A hike to remember

This hike was amazing from start to finish. Aleksandra, our guide, was funny, patient, accommodating and made the entire group feel safe so that we could enjoy the terrain of this amazing path. Fortunately, we had perfect weather for our hike, but keeping an eye on the forecast is a must since weather can change quickly. The guide made sure we knew that she was watching the weather closely not only the day of but days prior. Highly recommend this hike and company for your experience. Looking forward to booking my next adventure with them next time I am here. Mary

Via ferrata on Mojstrovka

We did the via ferrata up the historical route of Mojstrovka - an incredible experience and best tour guide/tour company one can ask for. Not only was our guide Jerry was amazing guy but his wealth of experience in the mountains was second to none and wouldn’t have been as fun without him. This is the number one guide for the mountains!

Operator response

Hello and thank you so much for your amazing review, we really appreciate this! We are happy to have Jerry as our guide, as we are happy that you enjoyed his company so much. If you ever return to Bled, you are more than welcome to visit us again. Wish you all the best, Altitude Activities team

Stunning scenery, awesome guide!

Timotei took us on a STUNNING hike in the Julian Alps to the summit of Debela Pec on NYE. The views on the way up and on the summit are truly panoramic - we took a million photos. My husband and I do a lot of hiking but we had never been on a hike in the snow - Timotei had crampons/microspikes for us which made the hike easy and fun and we had an unforgettable day in the mountains. The hike is about 10 miles long (16km), with 3000ft of elevation gain (1000m) so some fitness is required, as there are a few steep sections. We stopped at the hut on the way back for an awesome, traditional Slovenian lunch (stew with sausage) and mulled wine. All together a very memorable day - we very much hope to come back and if we do we will certainly be reaching out to Timotei to guide us again.

Operator response

Whenever you find yourself back in Slovenia, I will be more than happy to provide you with an even more unforgettable experience. Thank you again for the review! I wish you all the best, Timotei

Debela peč on your own

Debela peč, name of a mountain, can be translated as fat rocks. You can climb to this interesting mountain on your own in good weather. First, you need good mountain shoes. Hiking sticks are useful, too. Take a small backpack with some drinks, water or tea is the best. Use your car (or bike) and drive to Pokljuka, as near to Lipanca hut as you can. There are three possibilities for the start. One is near Medvedova konta and two starting points near the pasture called Zajavornik (1 h from Športhotel on Pokljuka). Mountain bikes can be used up to the Lipanca hut. From the starting point you have just 40 to 50 minutes to the Lipanca if you are walking. Lipanca is a group of houses. One is mountain hut with some food and drinks. From Lipanca hikers walk up for less than 1 h and 45 minutes. Path is steep but not dangerous at all. It is signed and is easy for orientation except in fog. When you come to the ridge, you have just 15 more minutes to the top. View is exceptional. So, you walk from 2 hours 15 minutes with young legs up to 3 hours for older ones. This trip is a good choice.

Amazing day

I'm writing this review a bit late, but we are 2 people and we have done the hiking in Julian Alps in June and it has been a great day. We had 2 guides with us and both girls were really nice, friendly and full of positive energy. Overall it has been a great day and i totally recommend it.
