Description

There are two Chinatowns, one that you see from a van or bus, and the one that can only be experienced on foot in the back alleys, food markets, and local restaurants. One Chinatown, the one from the bus, is interesting. Our Chinatown will surprise you with new adventures around every corner. In our Chinatown, artisans form Fortune Cookies by hand. In our Chinatown, artisans practice their craft in small alleys using techniques handed down for thousands of years. And in our Chinatown, the authentic cuisine will enliven your senses with new flavors, smells, and aromas. We'll explore exotic and unique Asian produce, herbs, and teas from the very people who know them best. We'll uncover their hidden secrets only intrepid locals know. And you'll be astonished by the new finds in secret alcoves. We'll spend about three hours eating everything from Dim Sum, fortune cookies, teas, and more.

Eating and learning with Roam Local in Chinatown

This was a great experience. I wanted to visit Chinatown but didn't want to just wander around. This was a perfect mix of food tasting and education. It was obvious from the beginning that Ryan knew what he was talking about and was enthusiastic about sharing that knowledge. He did it in a way that was respectful of the culture of Chinatown and gave us the opportunity to be respectful, too. The food was delicious and just the right amount and variety. This was my first food tour and I was concerned about being full before the end. There was no need to worry. From the 1st taste (a sesame ball) to the last (egg tart) I enjoyed tasting everything. I also appreciated the opportunity to support small business owners, including Ryan's. If I am back in San Francisco I know where to go. Be aware that more than one tour starts at the Dragon Gate and pay attention to make sure you get the right tour guide. I didn't know that, but Ryan was kind enough to check to see if I was in the other group instead of leaving without me. I would highly recommend this tour.

Operator response

What a wonderful review to read. I especially appreciate what you said about Ryan sharing the history and culture of Chinatown in such a respectful way. That is such an important part of what we want our tours to be—not just tasting great food, but helping people really understand the neighborhood and the people and small businesses that make it special. I’m also glad Ryan noticed the mix-up at the Dragon Gate and made sure you ended up with the right group! With several tours meeting there, it can definitely get confusing. And I loved hearing that this was your first food tour and that the amount and variety of food turned out to be just right. From that first sesame ball to the egg tart at the end, it sounds like Ryan gave you exactly the Chinatown experience we hope our guests will have. Thank you for choosing to spend part of your time in San Francisco with us, and especially for supporting a small local business. We’d love to have you join us again the next time you’re in the city!

Best day in San Fran

This tour was one the three of is were looking so forward to on our Annual Sisters’ Trip. Our guide, Brian, made this a great day! From the meet up right on time, to the getting to quickly know all our group’s names, Brian was informative, witty and fun. The food was really wonderful, and plentiful, leaving us all stuffed and happy. Brian is a font of information and knows some great stories, the ones of SF’s tough living, Wild West gold mining days of bars, tongs and brothels, to its development into the bustling tourist city of today. One of the best foodie/history tours we have taken.

Operator response

Thank you so much for spending part of your Annual Sisters' Trip with us! We know those trips create special memories, so it means a lot that our Chinatown tour was one of the highlights of your visit. I'm especially happy to hear that Brian made everyone feel welcome from the very beginning by learning names and bringing San Francisco's colorful history to life with his stories and sense of humor. It’s wonderful that you enjoyed both the history and the generous tastings—we always want our guests to leave full, happy, and with a deeper appreciation for Chinatown and San Francisco's fascinating past. Hearing you call this "one of the best foodie/history tours we have taken" truly means the world to our small, family-owned business. We hope to welcome you and your sisters back the next time your travels bring you to San Francisco!

Brian Rocks

A LOT of information! Possibly a little rushed but it did run almost 4 hours. The 3 stops for food/tea were great! The tea shop owner was amazing and the tour highlight.

Operator response

Thank you for joining us and sharing your feedback! We’re delighted you enjoyed the food and tea stops, especially the wonderful tea shop owner. Brian also accommodated your group’s requests by adding a few extra non-food stops, which extended the tour to nearly four hours. We appreciate your feedback about the pace and hope to welcome you on another tour soon!
