The only problem was the waiting time for the ferry across but apart from that amazing tour
The updating emails were nice to keep everyone in the know. The lines when we arrived were manned and we were told where to go. Easy trip, good audio sections.
Upon arriving at Pier 33 as instructed, I presented the tickets provided by Viator. However, the local operator’s kiosk system could not verify the booking under my name. Instead, the reservation was listed under the name "Tom Tucker". Because I could not provide an ID for Tom Tucker, my party was denied entry and subsequently missed the tour.
Wear a jacket if it's the night tour. Every thing else was really good. Don't need to change anything
Hills are steep. There is a tram. Lots of baby seagulls. The flowers were surprisingly beautiful!!! It was warmer than in the city.
Get there early to find parking. The lines get long quick. Once you get off so many places to eat or walk around the pier. Had a blast. Weather was perfect not to hot not to cold! Perfect!!
I would not recommend paying extra for the TripAdvisor self-guided audio tour of Alcatraz. The first issue was scheduling. We specifically booked the 10:00 a.m. departure because we had a flight later that day and needed to be back in plenty of time. The night before our tour, we received notice that our departure had been changed to 11:30 a.m., which created unnecessary stress and forced us to adjust our plans. Ultimately, it was less expensive for us to absorb additional rental car costs than to cancel the tour. The second issue was the audio guide itself. We paid for three audio-guided tours but were not aware that we needed to bring our own headphones. As a result, the three of us ended up sharing a single phone and listening together, making the additional per-person cost feel unnecessary. This important detail should be communicated more clearly before purchase. As for the content, the supplemental audio tour was underwhelming. It appeared to be AI-generated and did not provide significantly more interesting or useful information than what is already available through the official Alcatraz experience. I listened to the entire audio tour, but my two 15-year-old sons lost interest fairly quickly. By contrast, the official audio tour provided at the prison itself was excellent. It was engaging, informative, and far superior to the supplemental TripAdvisor audio guide. The prison tour was the highlight of the visit and well worth experiencing. Overall, Alcatraz itself is fascinating and absolutely worth visiting. However, I do not believe the TripAdvisor self-guided audio tour adds enough value to justify the extra expense. In hindsight, I would simply purchase tickets directly through the official Alcatraz tour provider and enjoy the excellent audio tour that is already included with admission.
Great tour really interesting would highly recommend
What a great experience, walking through Alcatraz the path so many walked was an experience I will never forget. Must see
