Description

Your journey begins with a pickup from your hotel in City Bowl. From there, we visit the District Six Museum, where you'll have the unique opportunity to engage with former residents who were directly affected by the apartheid-era forced removals. Next, we travel to Langa, Cape Town’s oldest township. This is more than just a tour—it’s a personal experience for our guides, many of whom call this community home. On a guided walkabout, you’ll visit a local kindergarten, community upliftment projects, traditional healers, small businesses, and other vibrant corners of township life. After the township visit, we continue to the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront, where you'll board the ferry to Robben Island. Upon arrival, a former political prisoner or experienced guide will lead you on a tour of the island, including a walk through the prison and a visit to the cell where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in incarceration.

Amazing tour! We can highly reccomen!

We had the pleasure of taking a township tour in Cape Town, and it truly exceeded all of our expectations. Our guide, Sam, was absolutely outstanding. His knowledge was incredibly impressive, but what made the experience even more special was his objectivity and the way he presented different perspectives with honesty and respect. It felt authentic, thoughtful, and deeply engaging. Throughout the entire tour, we felt completely safe and well taken care of. Sam created an atmosphere that was both comfortable and eye-opening, allowing us to truly connect with the places and people we encountered. This was not just a tour – it was a meaningful experience that gave us a much deeper understanding of the real Cape Town. We are very grateful for this opportunity and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city. Thank you, Sam, for such an unforgettable experience!

Misleading and Rushed Tour

Because it was Sunday we were dropped off at a church service with Langa people while our driver Godfrey went to get tickets for Robben Island so he said but he lied to us because then when we were getting a tour with a Langa resident we didn’t finish the tour and were rushed and picked up to go get tickets for Robben Island to catch the ferry so basically our guide left us at the church service to do his personal stuff that was wrong for him to do that. Second the description in the included part says taste traditional beer which we didn’t get so that was misleading. The whole trip was rushed and we didn’t enjoy that part. We paid a lot of money for this trip but weren’t happy

Excellent Cultural Tour

I highly recommend this trip! Sam was great guiding us through the local history. The history of course is challenging--but was presented in a non-judgemental manner. The visit to Langa Township was amazing--an experience that most do not get. The Robben Island trip was cancelled due to weather on the day booked; I appreciate Sam/Kono Tours arranging the tour for the following day. Robben Island is a tour not to be missed. Great value for the $$----thank you for a wonderful experience!
