One of the world’s most important collections of ancient artefacts, the Egyptian Museum takes pride of place in Downtown Cairo, on the north side of Midan Tahrir. Inside the great domed, oddly pinkish building, the glittering treasures of Tutankhamun and other great pharaohs lie alongside the grave goods, mummies, jewellery, eating bowls and toys of Egyptians whose names are lost to history. To walk around the museum is to embark on an adventure through time.

Admission not included30 min

Midan Tahrir (Liberation Sq) gained world renown in early 2011, when millions of Egyptians converged here to oust then-president Hosni Mubarak. On a regular day, it’s just your average giant roundabout (traffic circle), albeit one where half-a-dozen major arteries converge. The main reason you'll pass through is to visit the powder-pink puffball bulk of the Egyptian Museum.

The tour is for people with an agenda, not people who take their time.

I was repeatedly asked when I was done visiting the pyramids during the 4 hours I was there. I ask the driver recommendation for typical food, I was brought to a buffet with the driest food. 2 hours before the supposed end of tour, before going to the museum, I was told I needed to choose between the museum and the rest of the tour. At 4pm, the car needed to be given back. The tour was supposed to last between 8 and 10 hours. It was cut short because “I took too much time” at the Pyramids.

Not Great

I gave it a lot of thoughts on deciding to give this review. I would definitely say the trip was very informative and the driver took care of us very well. However, the tour started off late with the tour guide rushing through each places which we felt like we couldn't get a moment to enjoy each places. She took us to 2 shops that was not in the itinerary which was only for us to buy things. By 2pm she didn't say anything about lunch which we know it's not included but still we have to eat but she did not want because she wanted to end the tour even though we paid for a tour of 8 to 10 hours. After asking about seeing Khan el Khalili bazaar which she haven't taken us, we felt her being bothered by it. Then she took us to a bazaar for 10 mins which is nothing what we expected. Later on we found out she took us to a wrong side of the bazaar. She then ended the tour in a bad way which ruined our experience entirely.

The tour began well, with...

The tour began well, with a knowledgeable guide who shared historical insights, especially at Saqqara. Hwr, once we arrived at the first pyramid, we were told not to go close, & from then on, the experience felt rushed. We were quickly moved through the main sites but taken to three shops not listed in the itinerary, where we spent far more time than at the pyramids. The guide didn’t take us near all the Giza pyramids—only one—and it wasn’t until the end that we were told the attractions close at 4:00 PM. Had we known that earlier, we would’ve skipped the shop visits to enjoy more time at the pyramids. Overall, the guide was informative, but the tour felt unbalanced and rushed where it mattered most.

Booked to avoid scams.. they led me straight to the scam palace

I am putting one star for this tour for the 3 following rasons: 1-The tour company added a stop not mentioned in the itinerary. It was for a papyrus "museum" selling them for 10 to 20 times the cost.. claiming they are original and unique. Realised the scam a day later when I saw same things sold a fraction of the price. I papyrus 2-The tour guide while knowledgeable, was full of racisme.. She made me disgusted by the way she was talking about black people, and some civilization who occupied egypt. 3- I pre-paid full fares for the admission fee. As an Arab national, I was eligible for discounted fares. The agency knew and never mentioned it although they bought the discounted tickets. I was refunded a portion of the admission fee when I raised this. Still they kept a portion for themselves Overall average tour which you can book yourself for 1/3 the cost and avoid the scams.

Highlights of Cairo in your own time.

Booking through Viator made it very easy to organise my day trip to Cairo from Hurghada. I found a trip that allowed me to see the main highlights and the Tour Company EMO Tours who were excellent. I booked a private tour and thoroughly recommend as the Guide and Driver can flex the day to fit your agenda. Our guide Mohammad met us outside the airport on time. He was really educated in the history of Giza and Pyramids and especially was excellent taking us around the museum and gave us detailed info on each of the exhibits. We were two females travelling on our own but we felt very safe and was a great experience. The guide spoke excellent English .

Decent no-frills tour

The tour was overall fine. Our guide was friendly and professional but not that good at tailoring information to our needs or interests, perhaps because she is relatively new. The company was easy to communicate with in advance through WhatsApp.
