Itinerary
Your guide collects you from your Cairns accommodation and shares insights about Djabugay Aboriginal heritage and World Heritage Wet Tropics during the scenic drive to either Skyrail Smithfield Terminal or Freshwater Station, depending on optimal daily routing to avoid crowds.
Glide 7.5 kilometers above pristine rainforest canopy with Coral Sea views. Stop at Red Peak Station to walk elevated boardwalks through ancient forest, then visit Barron Falls Station to view spectacular waterfalls cascading into Barron Gorge National Park from multiple lookout platforms.
Explore Kuranda's famous Heritage Markets (established 1915) featuring Indigenous art, local crafts, and Australian souvenirs. Optional visits to Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, Birdworld Kuranda, or Koala Gardens (entry fees separate). Enjoy lunch at local cafes or restaurants, and discover village galleries and rainforest walks.
View Barron Falls from both Skyrail's station lookout and during the Kuranda Scenic Railway journey. Most spectacular during wet season (December-April) when tropical rainfall increases water volume dramatically.
Board the historic 1891 railway at Kuranda Station for the spectacular descent through Barron Gorge National Park. Travel through 15 hand-carved tunnels and across 37 heritage bridges, passing Stoney Creek Falls and rainforest gorges while commentary shares Queensland railway construction history.
Your guide meets you at either Cairns Station (or Skyrail Smithfield Terminal if itinerary reversed) for return to your Cairns accommodation (or Cruise Liner Port), sharing recommendations for other Tropical North Queensland attractions. Note: pickup station may change on the day depending on where guests are staying.

Man is very knowledgeable. We enjoyed his anecdotes! Even though the train part of our journey was canceled due to circumstances beyond anyone's control, he was ready with an alternate stop. We thoroughly enjoyed our day.
We had a great time in our tour of the rainforest and Kuranda Village. Man was very friendly and knowledgeable of the area. Highly recommended!
Thank-you very much for your review.
Just do it. Amazing, although it rained, coming down through the cloud on the skyrail was very exciting.
Glad to hear you enjoy the Skyrail ride. Thank you for your review.
We only got the train up as the skyrail was under maintenance which was a bit sad. They did orgainize other activities and lunch to make up the costs which was great but didn't have much time to walk around the town, we got time to have a coffee then had to meet travel guides.
Hi Karen, thank you for your review. Due to the day's rearrangement, time is really tight; sorry about that. Hopefully we will do it better next time.
Awesome experience! The scenic train took us through some gorgeous parts of the rainforest, including Barron Falls and tunnels. We also got to explore Kuranda village and take the Skyrail back down to Cairns. Our tour guide, Man, was super friendly and knowledgeable and made sure we had a wonderful time. Definitely recommend!
Thank-you for your review. Really appreciate.
If you don’t want any hassles getting to the train/Skyrail and getting tickets and lining up etc I would recommend this tour. You also have a 2 hour stop at Kuranda to have lunch and look at the sights/markets etc. Tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable.
Thank-you for review. Safe trip home.
Man was a competent and generally knowledgeable guide. However, it was difficult for us to see how the $300+ we paid for his services after deducting the ticket price translated into tangible value, especially after we participated in other equivalently-priced tours. Although we were the only two guests that day, the trip felt more like a transfer service rather than a bespoke guided tour. The pacing of the tour also felt rushed and Man constantly reminded us that he was waiting for us which felt somewhat passive aggressive to me. I’m aware that this itinerary has many self-guided elements but it would do well for Man to consider how the few touch points he has with guests can be improved to address the issues highlighted above.
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the Kuranda Railway and Skyrail experience, and that you found me pleasant and knowledgeable throughout the day. I’m sorry to hear that the tour felt more like a transfer service than a guided experience. While this itinerary includes self‑guided elements, my goal is always to provide a smooth, stress‑free day with clear communication and support from pickup to drop‑off. Your comments are helpful, and I will continue refining how I explain the tour's structure so expectations are always clear. Regarding the price, I understand why it may seem high when comparing only the ticket value. For transparency, out of the AUD $290 per person: AUD $174 goes directly to Viator as their commission AUD $268 covers the Kuranda Scenic Railway + Skyrail ticket Around AUD $50 goes toward fuel and vehicle costs for the day The remaining amount is what I earn for approximately 7 hours of work, including hotel pickup, transport, guiding, coordination, and ensuring everything runs smoothly I share this breakdown not as a justification, but to clarify how pricing works when booking through large OTAs and why small local operators often retain only a small portion of the total. Thank you again for joining the tour and for providing thoughtful feedback. I wish you many wonderful adventures ahead.
Man was our driver/tour guide. The tour was easy - hotel pick up, drop off to train, pick up in Kuranda to lookout in rainforest, dropped back to Kuranda to spend 2 hours doing whatever you liked - we did Birdworld and animal enclosures (coukd have done butterflies too), then lunched and explored shops. Then ride to Skyrail. Scenic Rail and Skyrail were great. A really lovely day out - no stress, no hassle. Good for people who want to relax or need to know exactly what is coming next. My son does not like exerting himself - we both enjoyed the birds!!
Thanks for the review. See you next time.
It was an Awesome Day! We Highly Recommend!
