On this private walking tour, you’ll witness striking contrasts firsthand. From the beautifully restored Old Town, with its Belle Époque charm, to the stark, imposing structures of the former Communist Civic Center, each step reveals a city shaped by two vastly different eras. More than just a visual journey, this tour unravels the story of 45 years of communist rule, helping you see beyond Bucharest’s colorful present. We begin in front of the Romanian Athenaeum, a symbol of the city before communism took hold. Here, you’ll uncover how the regime was brutally imposed at the end of WWII—Stalin’s grip on Eastern Europe, the terror of the KGB’s Secret Police, mass deportations to Siberia, and the systematic destruction of free press, private property, and culture itself.

This used to be known as the Palace Square until they changed the name in 1989. Today it is surrounded by the National Museum of Art of Romania, the Athenaeum concert hall, the University of Bucharest library, and the Athénée Palace Hotel. There's a modern monument raised in its center that looks like a potato on a stick. This square is associated with the end of the communist regime in Romania. It's where the then Communist leader Ceauşescu delivered his final speech in December 1989 that caused a popular revolt leading to the end of the communist rule. So there's really much more to see in this place than meets the eye. Some knowledge about Romanian history helps you appreciate this square more.

Mihai’s warm welcome really set the tone of the the day. He is extremely knowledgable and personable. You will get out of this tour as much or as little as you like and his real skill is tailoring the experience into what you want to get out of it as he has a natural ability to adapt to the audience. As a keen historian, this tour was absolutely perfect for me as he engaged in discussion and sharing opinions with me, as opposed to a pre made speech which other guides would give. He asks thought provoking questions and gives passionate and insightful views. The tour was relaxed and didn’t feel on a strict schedule or like he was clock watching. The private tour of communism was amazing. Our guide Andra met us at our hotel lobby so we did not have to locate a separate location. Andra was very informative and honest. She shared many first hand personal experiences from her family life. This approach made the experience come alive. She planned the walking tour in a very sequential manner helping us to understand how the rule of communism affected the population. At the conclusion of the tour she asked how she could help us. As a result she walked with us to our next location. We highly recommend this tour and Andra as a guide. Worth every penny. You won’t be disappointed.
