Skipping the line is a great way to save time and cut straight to the good stuff, and also gives us flexibility on entry times if needed. Once inside the museum, our experienced and qualified guides will give you the context needed to understand why artefacts are important and relevant to us now, as well as discussing some of the thornier aspects of retaining world treasures collected during Britain’s colonial period.

Founded in 1759, The British Museum boasts a collection of at least 8 million objects from across the world. Started from one man’s obsession with collecting objects from the past, you could spend years seeing everything on display - so make it easy for yourself and let How to do History navigate the museum for you, on this alternative trail through the nation’s best known (and contentious) museum, through the well known and not-so-well known galleries, taking an awe-inspiring historical trip through India, China, Egypt and more. Never mind The Rosetta Stone, what about medals from the Indian Uprising of 1857? An ancient board game from Mesopotamia? Or fragments of the world’s first library? Not your average tour of The British Museum: the tour will also feature issues confronting the museum in the 21st century as well as honest and insightful stories from the past in the here and now.

Great Family Tour

We had a great time at the British Museum with Matilda. She made it fun and interesting for our two kids (they wanted to go again!) while also making it engaging for us adults. We saw the big items, but she also gave us the history behind many smaller pieces that we might not have noticed on our own. Also really appreciated her thoughts on the ethics are antiquities and sharing where things currently stand in this space.

Thanks for the kind words!

Best historic guide in London! No other way to see the British museum!

Described by fellow guides as the best historian in London — and they were right. His knowledge runs deep and his storytelling brings history vividly to life. He intuitively met me where I was on my own journey with history, making the experience both personal and profound. I can’t wait to join every tour he offers!

10/10 would go again

Andy & Sheldon share history in a really fun way. I felt that whenever they could, they would connect to how it impacts things we do or believe in present day which was great. They’ve also got a great sense of humour between the two of them the group has blast chuckling away but learning lots at the same time. To wrap up we went out for a quick drink at a local pub which was the perfect end to the day. It’s a great day out with friends, family or solo !

Insightful as always

Andy and Sheldon did a great job on the tour walking us through history in the galleries we visited at the British Museum. The duo are knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and it was great to be in the presence of their passion for the subject. This was my second tour with Andy and this time was just as good as the first, learning something new each time from both guides. Looking forward to the next one!
