Berat and Belshi Lake - what happened to the second part of the day!

A mixed day - on the positive side our guide Arbor was lovely, very accommodating and helpful. He contacted us the night before with details and kept in touch this morning re pick up arrangements. The castle was the first stop with lovely views down to the valley, some useful information if a little limited and again Arbor was very caring in terms of checking everyone was ok as some members of the group were finding it difficult in the heat. On to Berat and a short walk along the river with a brief pause for information about the windows, before another short walk to see the house of the Pasha again with some information. The old Ottoman houses are beautiful and we would have liked further information about them or pointing in the right direction as to what else we should be looking at in the city. Free time followed and we went for lunch to the recommended restaurant which was charming and the food was fabulous, particularly the stuffed aubergine! We had half an hour to kill and ended up wandering along the river towards the minibus and stopping for a cool drink. Our expectation was that we would then go to Belshi Lake as per the advertised itinerary. This was not the case, we returned to Durres and when we queried why we hadn't gone there the response was that the traffic was too heavy. I'm sure the traffic doesn't vary too much day to day but even if it does the trip should make clear that the second part of the day is traffic dependent. Also there was no discussion or communication with the group that a key part of the itinerary was being cut. So, in summary a mixed day with both good and less good elements.

Operator response

Thank you for your detailed feedback. We are delighted that Arbor provided such a helpful and attentive service, and we are glad you enjoyed the castle views and the local cuisine. I would like to sincerely apologize for the confusion regarding the visit to Belshi Lake. While traffic can sometimes be a factor in our region, the primary reason for this change was the intense heatwave we are currently experiencing. The castle site offers little to no protection from the sun, and we made a safety-conscious decision to prioritize the wellbeing of our guests. Had we proceeded with the original itinerary, the group would have been required to climb and tour the castle during the peak, most dangerous hours of the sun. We felt it was necessary to protect everyone from the risks associated with such high temperatures. That said, I completely agree with your point about communication. Even when changes are made with safety in mind, it is our responsibility to discuss these adjustments clearly and transparently with you so you understand the "why" behind the decision. We failed to do that in this instance, and we are sorry for the resulting frustration. We are currently reviewing our operational protocols to ensure our guests are kept fully informed of any itinerary changes in the future. Your feedback regarding the need for more in-depth historical insights and better guidance during free time is also very valuable; we will be working with our team to enhance the quality and depth of information provided on our tours. We value your business and hope you might consider giving us another chance to provide the complete, flawless experience you expected. Best regards, The AlbShuttle Team

Skip the others, book this one!

Once again the best tour guide and excursion company one can book with. I had a booking with a different company and was let down, but Daniel came to my rescue and offered a last minute trip and saved the day. I recommend the trip to everyone. The views are fantastic, the guide has plenty of information and really tries to make the day worthwhile. Thank you again Daniel. Saved our holiday!
