This small island was once a fort, a military prison, and a maximum security federal penitentiary. Alcatraz Island is the site of the abandoned federal prison, the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States, early military fortifications, and natural features such as rock pools and a seabird colony (mostly western gulls, cormorants, and egrets). It measures 1,675 feet (511 m) by 590 feet (180 m) and is 135 feet (41 m) at highest point during mean tide.[5] The total area of the island is reported to be 22 acres (8.9 ha).[1] Landmarks on the island include the Main Cellhouse, Dining Hall, Lighthouse, the ruins of the Warden's House and Social Hall, Parade Grounds, Building 64, Water Tower, New Industries Building, Model Industries Building, and the Recreation Yard. It’s a part of history that everyone should know about. The entire tour was just amazing and very interesting. I think the best part was actually meeting Mr. Baker and purchasing his book.
Nice tour with stops at the main sites and with a very knowledgeable guide who throughout the tour told us what we could see out the windows. Finished with an interesting and well-organized visit to Alcatraz. The only thing the guide/company must remember is to inform better about where/which side of the hotel they are picking up guests at departure, since we unfortunately delayed the trip a little when we had not been informed of which exit of the hotel we were picked up and we therefore waited at the main entrance (and it turned out to be wrong).
Awesome saw a lot of places and the duo with Alcatraz is perfect combination definitely a must do if your here
The experience was wonderful. Buddy our tour guide for the San Francisco tour was very knowledgeable and friendly.
This was an audio tour. It was interesting to hear about all the history of Alcatraz & some of the more notable prisoners.
No time for food. Normal stopping place closed on Monday, we were not told of this prior to departure.
Buddy our guide was the best- very kind, personable and knowledgeable about SF; covered historical facts and interesting information about all the points of interest in the city. The Alcatraz portion was also excellent. Total experience 5 stars! True value!
We took the tour with Buddy and it was good as he brought us around San Francisco to all the major sights and the dropped us off at Alcatraz for the tour. The only draw back was no time for lunch other than eating something on the run.
Our tour guide Doug was not very good. Didn’t see half the stuff on the itinerary. Hey took us to a place and said you have 20 minutes to get food and the food choices were either $20 ham sandwich or a $20 turkey sandwich. I am worried that my next couple trips will be with him and have to deal with his not so pleasant experience. He then dropped us off to go to our Alcatraz tour and got mad because I didn’t have any cash on me for a tip. Did not know that I was supposed to have cash on me and let alone tip for a disappointing tour.
Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear that the tour did not meet your expectations. After receiving your review, we made several attempts to contact you directly to better understand your concerns and discuss your experience, but unfortunately, we were unable to connect. We also reviewed the tour details and feedback from other guests on the same departure, which was generally positive. While experiences can differ from person to person, we take all guest comments seriously and use them to improve our services. We would also like to clarify that gratuities are entirely optional and should never be expected. We appreciate you sharing your perspective and wish you the best in your future travels.
Jerry was amazing during the city tour!! Fun and very knowledgeable. Alcatraz was fun- self guided audio tour.
