Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence of the UK’s sovereigns since 1837 and today is the administrative headquarters of the Monarch. Today, Buckingham Palace is very much a working building and the centrepiece of the UK’s constitutional monarchy, it serves as the venue for many royal events and ceremonies from entertaining foreign Head of States to celebrating achievement at Investitures and receptions.

The Palace of Westminster, to give it its official name, serves as the meeting place for both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Both Houses work on behalf of UK citizens to check and challenge the work of Government, make and shape effective laws, and debate/make decisions on the big issues of the day.

The Abbey has been the coronation church since 1066, and is the final resting place of 17 monarchs, as well as the scene of 16 Royal weddings. The church we see today was begun by Henry III in 1245. It’s one of the most important Gothic buildings in the country, and has the medieval shrine of an Anglo-Saxon saint at its heart. Today it is still a church dedicated to regular worship and to the celebration of great events in the life of the nation. Neither a cathedral nor a parish church, Westminster Abbey (or the Collegiate Church of St Peter, Westminster to give it its correct title) is a "Royal Peculiar" under the jurisdiction of a Dean and Chapter, subject only to the Sovereign and not to any archbishop or bishop.

For more than 1,400 years, a Cathedral dedicated to St Paul has stood at the highest point in the City. Frequently at the centre of national events, traditions have been observed here and radical new ideas have found expression under the iconic dome. In many cases these events have left some physical record as well as echoes in the intangible memory of the building. The present Cathedral, the masterpiece of Britain's most famous architect Sir Christopher Wren, is at least the fourth to have stood on the site. It was built after its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666, and services began in 1697. This was the first Cathedral to be built after the English Reformation in the sixteenth-century, when Henry VIII removed the Church of England from the jurisdiction of the Pope and the Crown took control of the life of the church.

Admission not included15 min

A Palace, a Prison, a place of Execution! An Armoury, an Observatory, and a Royal Zoo.
3 Queens of England lost their heads here - Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard and Lady Jane Grey.
The Tower is where the Crown Jewels are kept (used in all coronations of our Kings and
Queens).

Admission not included15 min

Tower Bridge has become a recognisable London landmark. It is sometimes confused with London Bridge, about 0.5 miles (0.80 km) upstream, which has led to a popular urban legend about an American purchasing the wrong bridge. Several stunt pilots have flown underneath the bridge.

Admission not included15 min

The original and official entrance to both St James’s Palace and Buckingham Palace.
A Guard is mounted here by members of the Household Cavalry, either the Blues and Royal or the Lifeguards (Kings Troop in July) – the Guard Changes 11am daily.
There is a Guard inspection at 4pm every afternoon.
Until the late 19th Century Horseguards was also the HQ of the British Army, and remains today the official HQ for Army units based in London.

A great day of sightseeing in London for family of 5

We had such a fun day with Paul. There were 5 of us, including my 78-year old mother, and we fit comfortably in Paul's impeccably clean black cab. Paul was a great storyteller, and catered to each of our questions and needs with care. We were most grateful for how he treated my mother, helping her in and out of the cab, and finding short walks for the group to accommodate her restrictions. If you're thinking of booking any tours in London, make this your first and build your trip around it. Paul's list of recommended places to eat, sightsee and visit made the rest of our time in London so much more enjoyable. We'll be back, Paul!

Fun & flexible!

We did the four-hour London private tour with Black Cab tour guide. The tour was well-organized, and Paul, our excellent guide, flexibly modified our itinerary to suit our preferences. He provided great insights into what we saw, and accommodated our needs at every turn. The 4 hours flew by. I'd highly recommend this private tour (we were 2 couples). And you'd be very fortunate to have Paul as your driver & guide.

Operator response

thank you so much for such a great review, it was my pleasure meeting you all, and you're right the 4 hours went in no time sadly!

Great tour of London!

Mark was an excellent guide. He was so knowledgeable and funny to keep my two teens interested. We learned so much on this trip, stopped at all the places we wanted to go and got some great pictures. My husband, who is not a tour type person, said it was the best tour he had ever been on and he really enjoyed it.

Operator response

thank you so much for the great review, I knew you would have a great time with Mark!

London Private Tour

We had an amazing time on our tour of London with Paul! He was right on time, super organized, and made sure we got to see every single spot we had hoped to visit. It was clear he had planned everything carefully, and he kept the day running smoothly without ever making us feel rushed. Paul was friendly, easy to talk to, and shared just the right amount of history and fun facts along the way. He was always happy to answer questions and he even made some great suggestions for things we could do and see while we were there, that we wouldn’t have known about otherwise. His attention to detail and genuine care for our experience made such a difference. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide — thank you, Paul, for such a memorable and well-run tour! Highly recommend! Andrea M.

10/10 Recommend

If you are lucky to have Paul as your guide, I can guarantee you an excellent tour. Paul communicated with me prior to our tour and created an itinerary that made sense for our family. Paul is quite knowledgeable about London and is an excellent, safe driver. Most importantly, he was kind and patient to my quirky parents who sometimes did not follow directions (lol). I selected this tour mainly for my father who has limited mobility. My parents have previously visited London in the 80s and didn't necessarily needed the full experience. They wanted to see things up close in the comfort of a black cab with the option of short walks. This tour was worth every penny I spent on it and will book again when I come back to London with my husband!
