It's a long drive from Cairo - literally took all day but well worth it. Siwa is like stepping back in time with plenty of rustic charm. Don't expect 5* luxury, but you really get a taste of Egyptian desert life. The hotel we stayed at was like Aladdin/Star wars mixed together, and out of the busy centre. Our guide Norr was fabulous, knew the history of the places we visited, gave really good advice for what to and not to purchase/tip etc and made sure we had the best time. The Salt lakes were great fun (take coral shoes as the salt can be sharp). The Desert Safari was such good fun - not for the faint hearted), and the sunset incredible. Shalli was very interesting as was The Mountain of the Dead. The view from the top of both is amazing - lots of steps but if you can - do it. Visited El Alamein on the last day, which was good. Overall this is well worth it for an authentic taste of the Oasis
