Point Joe is the 5th point on 17-Mile Drive. Its coastline is made of Granite rocks formed 65 million years back and it gives this coastline a rugged look. The place had several shipwrecks in history due to its rocky shares and its location near to Monterey Bay. The place has ample parking and sitting benches to relax. There are several information boards to read about the place. About the origin of the name Point Joe, there is debate over that for years now. Some historians believe that there was a Chinese man who lived in a driftwood structure here in the early 1900's that sold goods to explorers. It is unclear whether Point Joe was named for the Chinese man or if the man was named after the location. A great place to look out for everyones favorite marine mammal the Souther Sea Otter.

10 min

See the place where an old, Chinese fishing village used to sit.

10 min

We take a restroom break here and watch sea lions play in the water. Your guide will help you identify the wildlife that you see and share some fun facts...both about the animals and the rock.

Great way to experience California coastal landscape

Trip used Specialized e-bike, a well known bike brand, bike is built solid and performed very well, fully charged , has more than enough power to handle the entire trip, on sandy road or steep uphill. One caveat, need to have at least above intermediate bike skill/handle on uphill downhill and different road surfaces and understand how bike gearing operates and use it.

Great Way to See 17 Mile Drive

This is a fun and unique way to experience 17 mile drive without having to deal with the traffic congestion that going in a car requires. It’s easy for any skill level as long as you can ride a bike. The bikes were simple to operate and the ride is the perfect length of time. Great stops along the way and plenty of good photo ops. My only warning is parking- the town is very busy so allow at least 30 extra minutes to find parking and you may have to park far away and walk in.

Great E-bike experience

Cathy was an excellent guide and you couldn’t ask for a better way to experience the 17 mile drive. It was our first time using e-bikes and they worked great! We would definitely recommend this tour.

Leisurely & time well spent!

After 3 days of rigorous hiking, I wasn’t exactly thrilled to get on a bike. I was ready for a more leisurely activity. BUT- my husband and 2 teens were insistent. And- I’m glad they were! This was the most PERFECT way to experience Carmel and 17mi drive. Kathy was super knowledgeable about all the local spots that we would have totally overlooked had we been on our own. I also enjoyed the historic insights she had about the area. We only had 1 day in Carmel on our Northern CA loop trip and this was time well spent, and not strenuous at all. These bikes drive themselves!! Thank you Mad Dogs and Kathy!! 💕

Beautiful ride

Beautiful ride. Saw some cool sights. Highly recommend but only if you are an intermediate level biker. Some dodging cars, etc that may be tough for novice bikers.
