Itinerary
A day excursion to the Atlas Mountains and Imlil is one of the most magnificent day trips you can do from Marrakech if you want to experience the genuine and rustic side of Morocco. Imlil is located in the heart of the Atlas Mountains. We will begin our day trip to Imlil at 9:00 a.m. from Marrakech in a 4WD vehicle or a mini van for the 1 hour and thirty minute drive south up the Moulay Brahim Gorges, and the Berber village of Asni very popular for its weekly market every Saturday, then to Imlil Crossing a vibrant green valley that remains fresh and lush even during the hottest days of the summer.
Imlil is a little settlement that may be found on the foothills of Toubkal mountain, which is the highest peak in Morocco. Because of its advantageous location and close proximity to a number of Berber communities, Imlil serves as the primary starting point for many treks and walks that go to the summit of Toubkal. It is also the place where mountain guides and mules may be hired. Arrival in Imlil, here we will leave our vehicle and begin a walk for approximately one hour in the direction of the south to the Berber village of Aroumd (Aremd) (1843m).
Along the way, we will pass through the hamlets of ait souka, Targa, and Imoula, up and down the stark slopes, with the jagged Western High Atlas peaks of the Toubkal Massif before us - Jbels Aguelzi Aroumd is a village in the Assif At Mizane Valley that will be our next destination. It is built on a large moraine spur and appears to be house after house stacked on top of one another. It looks out over ancient terraced fields of barley, corn, and vegetables and is always surrounded by almond and walnut trees. After that, we continue on for an additional half an hour to reach our lunch destination, which will be served on top of a lovely patio among a Berber family in the hamlet of Armed.
Following that, you'll have some time to have a stroll before we head back to Marrakech.

We had a wonderful experience in the Atlas Mountains! Thanks again to Mohamed and his family for their kindness and warm welcome. We look forward to coming back next year!
This is not my first experience with Trek Atlas and once again the organization is on top. Everything is perfectly organized
My daughter and I did a day trip to Imlil and Berber villages one day, and Ourika the following. Both days were great, but for us, the visit and walk in Ourika was particularly great. Our guide, Mohamed Baddaz was INCREDIBLE!!! Mohamed our driver was also INCREDIBLE. On time, safe, informative and kind. I was nervous going up the roads to the Atlas Mountains and he was very understanding and made me feel super comfortable. Mohamed who organized and arranged everything was super responsive, organized and fabulous too. Thank you for arranging everything and for providing us with 2 fabulous days! The only thing you may want to suggest to tourists is to bring Moroccan Dirham, to purchase things on the way and also, I was unaware we had to pay in local $, rather than use a credit card, to pay for the excursion. We went to a bank machine, but had I known beforehand, I would have had more cash on hand. Can’t wait to visit again.
A beautiful excursion, where the people are very nice. Our companion Moha was the best, very generous and friendly. We loved this excursion like all the others that he accompanied us with. Super grateful! We will return.
My wife and I had an absolutely wonderful 5 day trek with the Trek Atlas team, consisting of Mohamed our guide and Hassan as our mule driver and wonderful cook. From start to finish, our experience with Trek Atlas was exceptional and the highlight of our trip to Morocco. The trip was professionally organised and managed from start to finish. So glad we choose to go with Trek Atlas for our five day adventure around Imlil valley and to the top of Mt. Toubkal. Communication: Communication with Trek Alas was smooth - no issues in organising our trip with Ahmend, answering any questions we had before our arrival as well as during our 5 days with the Trek Atlas Team. Language: No issues with communication in English. Our guide and mule driver/cook both spoke English and were able to answer any questions we had. Food: Excellent. Hassan cooked up some great meals on the trail and ensured that our meals were always an experience. Guide: Mohamed was a wonderful guide that really took exceptional care of of us. While ascending Toubkal, he was encouraging and providing all the support we needed (putting on crampons for the icy patches). However, the decent was difficult and Mohamed was there to support my wife through many of the tricky areas. A brief overview of our 5 days overview: 4 full days on the in the mountains crossing several valleys and visiting multiple Berber villages was the highlight of our trip. Such a beautiful area. The pace and distance travelled each day was perfect for us and could be adjusted with our guide. Day 1 we walked around 16 KM and walked through two berber villages in the evening. Stayed at a local rest house that was basic but clean (good to bring your own towel for this stay and the mountain lodge). Day 2’s hike was around 20KM across some spectacular scenery and a visit to a beautiful waterfall - great day. The 3rd day was more relaxed as we headed up to the mountain lodge to get ready to hike Mt. Toubkal early the next morning. A long lunch by the river with the most beautiful mountains to look at was wonderful. Day 4 was a long and challenging up Mt. Toubkal. After coming down from Mt. Toubkal (around 6km up and back), we continued on to Aroumd, another 10+KM from the mountain lodge. You’ll be exhausted when you arrive to Aroumd, but it was much better going to Aroumd to sleep in a nice place with private toilet than another night in the dormitory in the mountain lodge! Reflecting on the epic day’s climb to the top of Mt. Toubkal while having a great meal on the terrace was simply amazing. Day 5 - late breakfast and nice walk into Imlil stopping by some waterfalls along the road to town. It was just an amazing unforgettable experience that we recommend to anyone that wants to spend more time in this beautiful area visiting multiple villages. Highly recommend going with Trek Atlas (they offer many other trips and excursions) and spending more time in the area - well worth the time invested. We’ll be back to see more of this area!
