Itinerary
Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world. It was built early in the 12th century. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious centre since its foundation. We will enter the great temple from the little-visited eastern side. We continue our journey on foot and creep through a jungle path to the North ancient library pool. Listen to the explanations of your expert guide, then spend time venturing into the central chambers of the temple, where your local guide will reveal the history, myths and stories depicted on the stone bas-reliefs (the longest stretch of bas-relief carvings in the world) then you will venture deep into the central chambers of this truly great temple. Your knowledgeable guide will ensure that your visit to Angkor Wat leaves you with a rich understanding of the history and purpose of the great temple, and also of the mighty Angkorian civilisation.
The South Gate is one of the five gates of Angkor Thom (the Ancient Capital City of the Khmer Empire). The gate flanked by a row of 54 stone figures on each side was the entrance to the fortified city of Angkor Thom. At the height of its greatness, Angkor Thom had a population of more than one million people and was larger in size than the city of London. It is one of the most popular tourist spots in the Angkor Wat area.
The Bayon is a richly decorated Khmer temple at Angkor in Cambodia. Built in the 13th century as the state temple of King Jayavarman VII, the Bayon stands at the centre of Jayavarman's capital. The Bayon's most distinctive feature is the multitude of serene and smiling stone faces on the many towers which jut out from the upper terrace and cluster around its central peak. You'll see its beautifully crafted central towers, covered in more than 200 enormous faces. The temple has two sets of bas-reliefs, which present a combination of mythological, historical and mundane scenes. The outer wall of the outer gallery features a series of bas-reliefs depicting historical events and scenes from the everyday life of the Angkorian Khmer. The inner gallery bas-reliefs depict mythological events.
Baphuon is located in Angkor Thom, northwest of the Bayon. Built in the mid-11th century, it is a three-tiered temple mountain built as the state temple. The temple adjoins the southern enclosure of the Royal Palace and measures 120 metres east-west by 100 metres north-south at its base and stands 34 meters tall without its tower, which would have made it roughly 50 meters tall. Its appearance apparently impressed Temür Khan's late of the 13th century envoy Chou Ta-kuan during his visit from 1296 to 1297, who said Bayon was the Tower of Gold and Baphuon was 'the Tower of Bronze...a truly astonishing spectacle, with more than ten chambers at its base.
Hidden Gem: Your guide will take to you a place that most tourists have never seen it. Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.
Phimeanakas (celestial temple) or Vimeanakas built at the end of the 10th century, during the reign of Rajendravarman (from 941-968), then completed by Suryavarman I in the shape of the three tier pyramids as a Hindu temple. On top of the pyramid there was a tower, while on the edge of the top platform there are galleries. Phimeanakas is located inside the walled enclosure of the Royal Palace of Angkor Thom.
The famous Terrace of the Leper King. The U-shaped structure is thought by some to have been used as a royal cremation site. It was built in the 13th century under King Jayavarman VII, though its modern name derives from a 15th-century sculpture discovered at the site. The statue depicts the Hindu god Yama, the god of death.
The 350 m long Terrace of Elephants was used as a giant reviewing stand for public ceremonies and served as a base for the king's grand audience. Some local Khmer residents call it “the Ancient Khmer Stadium”. It was built in the 13th century under King Jayavarman VII.
Secret stop: A majestic place that set the tone for the day’s adventure. Don’t listen to what they say, go to see. All journeys have secret destinations of which the travelers are unaware.
The jungle-enveloped Ta Prohm (Tomb raider temple)– is one of the most atmospheric of all temples in Angkor. Ta Prohm was built in the 13th century. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Ta Prohm is in much the same condition in which it was found, the photogenic and atmospheric combination of trees growing out of the ruins and the jungle surroundings have made it one of Angkor's most popular temples with visitors. UNESCO inscribed Ta Prohm on the World Heritage List in 1992. Today, it is one of the most visited complexes in Cambodia’s Angkor region. Ta Prohm was a religious temple located in the center of the Ancient Khmer University during the 12th and 13th centuries.

We thoroughly enjoyed this tour and if you, like us, have never been to Angkor Wat and the other nearby temples complexes, would highly recommend it. The tour takes you through several of the main attractions, Bayon, Bauphon, Ta Prohm, and of course, Angkor Wat, etc., and our guide, Mr. Sim, was very well versed in the history of each of them. He effectively summarized the "big picture" at each stop and pointed out fine details that we would never have noticed on our own. Mr. Sim was friendly, very professional, and clearly enthusiastic about sharing the history of these architectural and cultural wonders. FYI, there's no lunch stop on the tour, which was fine with us, but you may wish to bring snacks. Bottled water was provided. Be prepared for lots of walking and climbing up and down steps. But we're both in our 60s and we did fine.
Hi Douglas, thank you for sharing your experience on our Angkor Wat Temple Tour! We're particularly happy to hear you enjoyed your tour experience with our guide Sim. We will pass this on to him. We're continuously working to make our tours even better, and feedback like yours helps us achieve this. We hope to welcome you back on another adventure soon!" From Journey2 Teams
Mr. Sim has been one of the best tour guides in our month long tour through South East Asia. He was kind, polite, very knowledgeable and well prepared. He met us at our hotel lobby where he shared with us a route map and information about the different temples we would visit. I'm glad that we booked this private tour, not only to gain facts and interesting stories about what we were seeing; but, also appreciated someone guiding us through the maze like parts of some of the temples. Sim also helped us with photos, taking some of them, and also showing us unique spots to take our photos from. We won't forget the cool, nice smelling hand towels and water provided after every stop to help us freshen up and cool down from the hot weather - the little details that mean so much. We'd been looking forward to this tour of Angkor Wat and surrounding temples; and, Journey 2 Angkor, Mr. Sim and their driver provided an amazing tour making our time in Siem Reap unforgettable.

What an absolutely fabulous day! I booked thru Viators and our certified guide Sim and his tuk-tuk driver were right on time. Sim went over our schedule and said we could add to it should we like since it was our day! All together we visited 8 temples, each quite unique. The history of this great civilization was shared with us at each. We felt it would be near impossible to do this without a guide and the tuk tuk took us between temples. Our driver also had cold water after each of our 30-60 minutes stops and even ice cold washcloths! Though it was only in the 80’s we are from Washington State and the heat really hits me. Sim asked us a couple of times if we’d like to take less of a climb and I was grateful. After stopping for lunch and seeing our last temple we returned to our hotel and Sim sent us a list of which temples we visited. He also gave us a local map and suggestions of other things to see on our stay. Also shopping and dining information! All in all a terrific day!

An excellent day, seeing multiple temples and religious architecture. Our guide Bunna took us to Angkor Wat through an entrance that was much less known to the public and therefore much less crowded and more peaceful. His explanations of the details of the temples were thorough and incredibly interesting! The jungle temple and Elephant Terrace were also incredible, and Bunna knew exactly where the most interesting parts were. Having a driver for the day makes such a difference as there is actually quite a distance between temples. In addition, we had a fantastic traditional Khmer lunch at a lovely restaurant.

Bunna took to all the best photo spots for the sites, including going backward through some sites to make sure the sun was in the right place for the shots. He offered us complimentary water and wet towels when we travelled using the Tuk tuk. He was very well versed in historical knowledge and could answer any questions we posed to him throughout the day. We felt very safe on our trip and we thoroughly enjoyed our time seeing the temples in Cambodia, would definitely recommend getting him as your guide if you’re planning on going. 👍

Our guide Bunna was wonderful. He was on time, very informative and knowledgeable having been a professional guide for many years and had impeccable English making everything much easier. He was flexible, would often help take our picture and would spend more time where we liked and even snuck an extra spot in we really wanted to see. Our Tuk Tuk was very comfortable and he and the driver always kept us hydrated and cool. I would thoroughly recommend Bunna and his driver for a great day seeing all around Siam Reap.

Amazing way to experience Angkor Wat temples. I would give this tour and tour guide Sim 10 stars if that was possible. Tuk tuk provides you with agility to move in easy way and this is a luxury tuk tuk (cold towels, bottled water, super clean). Professional driver, and very well educated tour guide, with high social intelligence. Highly recommended and best value for money.
