It holds over 2,100 graves of Allied soldiers and is home to the Australian National Memorial, honoring 10,000 Australians who died on the Western Front with no known grave. The site is tied to the pivotal battle of April 1918, where Australian troops played a crucial role.
The Sir John Monash Centre in Fouilloy, France, is an interactive museum dedicated to Australia’s role on the Western Front during World War I. Located behind the Australian National Memorial, it uses cutting-edge technology to share soldiers' stories and commemorate their sacrifices.
The Australian Corps Memorial in Le Hamel, France, commemorates the Australian-led victory in the Battle of Hamel on 4 July 1918. The memorial honors the innovative tactics of General Sir John Monash and the cooperation of Allied forces in this pivotal battle of World War I.
The Musée Somme 1916 in Albert, France, is an underground museum dedicated to the Battle of the Somme. Located in a former air-raid shelter, it features artifacts, displays, and dioramas that vividly depict the experiences of soldiers during World War I.
The Lochnagar Crater in Ovillers-la-Boisselle, France, is a massive mine crater from the Battle of the Somme (1 July 1916). Created by a British explosion under German lines, it is now a memorial site symbolizing the devastation and sacrifice of World War I.
The Thiepval Memorial in Thiepval, France, is a major World War I memorial honoring over 72,000 British and South African soldiers missing from the Somme. The imposing structure also commemorates the sacrifices made during the Battle of the Somme in 1916.
The Ulster Tower in Thiepval, France, is a memorial to the men of the 36th (Ulster) Division who fought during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Designed to resemble Helen’s Tower in Northern Ireland, it stands as a tribute to their courage and sacrifice.
The Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial in Beaumont-Hamel, France, commemorates the Newfoundland Regiment's heavy losses during the Battle of the Somme on July 1, 1916. The site features preserved trenches, the Caribou Monument, and a visitor center, honoring the regiment’s bravery and sacrifice.
The Preserved Trenches at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in Vimy, France, offer a poignant glimpse into the conditions of World War I. These trenches are part of the larger memorial site dedicated to the Canadian soldiers who fought at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917. The preserved trenches help visitors understand the challenges and sacrifices faced by soldiers during the battle.
The Canadian National Vimy Memorial in Vimy, France, honors the 61,000 Canadian soldiers who died during World War I, particularly those who fought at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917. David our tour guide was wonderful and Ivan our driver was safe, respectful and helpful. He had bottles of water for us, umbrellas if it rained and even phone charging cords. We loved every minute of our day
Thank you so much for your review!!
We had a nice time with Oksana and Ivan. It was really convenient to be picked up and dropped off at our hotel in Paris. We saw several important WWI sites and museums in the area of Arras, Vimy, etc. These sites are mainly British, Australian, and Canadian focused. It was a great selection of battlefield sites and museums. The museum in Albert was a surprise hit. The guide will drop you off for lunch (if you have any dietary restrictions, let them know ahead of time). The car was comfortable and a couple of bottled waters were included, which was great. Oksana and Ivan were both polite and professional. Some things to bear in mind. First, it's a lot of driving, about 2hrs each way and then some driving between sites. Second, to some extent you are being driven to sites where the tour is given by museum staff (e.g. Vimy trenches and tunnels tour) or where you go through the museum on your own (Albert museum, Monash museum). Oksana gave us some good background information at the bigger memorials like the Vimy and Thiepval monuments and showed us around those locations. Overall, it's a very long day (12 hours) but it's a great way to see some incredible WWI sites if you can only spare a day to do it.
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your detailed review! We are truly happy to hear that you enjoyed your day exploring the WWI sites with Oksana and Ivan, and that the pickup, drop-off, and overall comfort of the trip added to your experience. It is wonderful that the selection of sites including Arras, Vimy, and the Albert Museum left a positive impression. We appreciate your helpful notes about the long driving distances and the structure of the visits at certain locations. You are absolutely right: some sites can only be visited with their own museum guides, and we always do our best to complement this with background information and personal guidance throughout the day. Thank you again for your kind words about Oksana and Ivan, we will be sure to pass them along. We are glad the day was meaningful for you, even if a long one, and we hope to welcome you on another tour in the future.
Ivan was an excellent driver. Oksana was also an excellent guide, she was very knowledgeable of all the war memorial sites and accompanied us every step. The Beaumont-Hamel site was of particular interest us because we are from Newfoundland. They were able to adjust the normal route schedule so that we could start at the Canadian and Newfoundland memorials first, allowing us plenty of time before moving to the other sites. They also went out of their way to accommodate my wife’s dietary requirements for lunch. All in all it was a truly memorable experience for us particularly because we were escorted by two very nice people. Thank you very much, Doug and Verda
Thank you for your review. We are very happy that you liked everything!
