Itinerary
one of the four major basilicas of Roman Catholic church. According to the Christian tradition, the church filled with a sacred atmosphere was built exactly over the tomb of the apostle, not far from the site of his martyrdom.
Today it is a quiet and peaceful monastery in the heart of Rome and one of the most venerated places in the city for pilgrims. Christian tradition holds that the Roman court sentenced the apostle to death for professing his creed. When Paul was beheaded his head bounced three times – miraculously producing three springs of water. You will see the three springs that still flow in the sanctuary of the monastery.
It's the oldest prison in Rome, where the Apostles St. Paul and St. Peter were imprisoned for 9 months and where, according to legend, they miraculously made water appear in order to baptize the guards.
