10:30 - 12:00 Visit of The Caen Memorial and Museum, located in the British Sword Beach sector. Caen Museum is the best World War II museum in France. An excellent 19-minute film documents this battle with original historic footage. 12:00 Departure to Arromanches-les-Bains. It takes about 0,5 hour (30 km) on the national roads crossing beautiful countryside and small villages.

60 min

12:30 - 13:30 Lunch break and visit of Arromanches-les-Bains town. The way from Caen Memorial to the Arromanches-les-Bains is 26 km and takes just half an hour. Arromanches is a small seaside town famous for its former artificial Mulberry Harbour. Located in the center of the Gold Beach landing zone it played an invaluable role in the D-Day landings. The Allies built here an artificial temporary harbour for unloading of vehicles, materials, and people. Mulberry Harbour had, by June 12, 1944, helped bring 300,000 men, 54,000 vehicles, and 104,000 tons of supplies to Europe.

The cliffs leading down to the beaches contain the remnants of the German defences, including concrete casemates with memorials to the soldiers. At Normandy American Cemetery you’ll see as well the semicircular memorial colonnade with the sculpture “Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves” and large maps of military operations; and the most beautiful, idyllic spot on Planet Earth. 16:10 Departure to the close located Overlord Museum.

60 min

17:30 - 18:30 Arrival at Pointe du Hoc, a prominent cliff between Utah and Omaha Beach. This point was important because it was the highest land between Omaha and Utah beaches and could thus fire upon both of them. The site was a gun battery, fortified with concrete casemates and gun pits, forming part of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall defences. Visiting the Pointe du Hoc You will learn about the 2nd Ranger battalion sacrifice to take this crucial gun battery on the cliffs of Omaha Beach on June 6th 1944. Many of the original fortifications and bunkers remain on the site and are open to the public, including the fire control casemate, on top of which there is a monument to the 2nd Ranger Battalion. 18:30 Departure to Paris. It takes about 3,5 hours (300 km).

Great Normandy Beach option

Great day trip. It is a long day, but if you want to see the beaches, this is an excellent option. Our guide Eli (Ellie) was very knowledgeable and friendly. Our driver (so sorry, don’t remember his name) was very competent and helpful; never felt unsafe. I chose this particular tour because it gave us time at the sensational museum at Caen. It also stops at a newer museum called the Overlord Museum, which has many interesting artifacts. Our arrival at the American cemetery was timed perfectly to see the daily ritual of lowering the flags over the cemetery; very moving. I booked directly with Clewel Travel because it was cheaper. Thank you, Eli!

Brave men that fought for our freedom.

David was the most knowledgeable tour guide we have ever had. His knowledge of the details and history of D-Day helped bring the activities of the invasion to life. Seeing the cemetery with all the graves of the soldiers gave a new appreciation to the sacrifices made by those young men and their families for our freedom. The museum tour gave tremendous insight into the struggle the soldiers faced and the cemetery grounds makes you proud to see how the invasion was memorialized for future generations to live the experience. Brave men who protected our constitution and our freedoms. Don’t miss this tour

Great day trip from Paris to the Normandy D-Day beaches

We stayed for a few days in Paris and knew that a tour out to the beaches of Normandy to see the D-Day landing locations was a priority. We booked this tour and could not be happier with our experience. Our tour guide Eli was very knowledgeable and delightful. She and driver Alex picked us up right at our Paris hotel in a high end luxury Mercedes sedan. They were right on time for the scheduled pickup. Eli guided us every step of the way to get the most out of our day. Alex took great care of getting us in and out of the car and always being close by if there were a few minutes of rain or if it was time to move on to the next stop. Overall, if you are staying in Paris and have a day dedicated to the World War II history of Operation Overlord, I highly recommend this tour along with Eli and Alex.
