Description

Athens is a fascinating city in which the glorious past mingles with the bust of modern life. You will admire wonderful architecture of the 19th century in buildings like the Academy, the University, the National Library, the Numismatic Museum, the former royal palace in Syntagma square, now the Parliament of Greece, guarded by the ‘evzones’ standing in front of the monument to the unknown soldier. You will see Roman Athens in the ruins of the temple of Olympian Zeus and Hadrian’s arch. The gardens of Zappeion Hall and the fine marble stadium, where the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896, form an attractive part of the city. And most of all, you will visit the Acropolis of Athens, the sacred hill, where the masterpieces of ancient architecture stand. From there you will enjoy a panoramic view of other hills and important sites of the ancient city, such as the Areopagus Hill, the Ancient agora, the theater of Dionysos as well as a breathtaking view of the whole city.

UNESCO calls it the symbol of World Heritage. It’ s the symbol of democracy and Greek civilization. It’s the site of four of the greatest masterpieces of classical Greek art – the Parthenon (former temple on the Athenian Acropolis, Greece, dedicated to the goddess Athena) , the Propylaea (the monumental gateway to the Acropolis), the Erechtheum (is an ancient Greek temple on the north side of the Acropolis of Athens  which was dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon) and the Temple of Athena Nike.

You will see the shift change of the guards (evzones) in front of the Greek parliament and the memorial of the Unknown soldier.

The Presidential Mansion is the official residence of the president of the Hellenic Republic. It served previously as the Royal Palace until the abolition of the monarchy by the 1973 referendum. The Presidential Mansion in Athens is considered to be one of the best examples of neoclassicism in town planning.

Pass by

Admire the Academy of Athens that stands on the far-right end of the Athenian Trilogy complex. Its construction lasted a little less than three decades, from 1859 to 1885. Its impeccable design with the use of Pentelic marble has made the building a world-renowned monument, widely considered to be one of the best examples of neoclassical architecture on the globe. In front of it, you’ll get the chance to marvel at Socrates and Plato, the most important philosophers in Greek history, on each side of the building.

Pass by

The Univercity of Athens or Panepistimio is decorated at the inside by a colossal 45-meter mural that is both extravagant and pompous. At the entrance of the building, you’ll see five different statues of five different but equally important men in the shaping of Athens as a modern capital city. From left to right, the statutes depict philhellene William Ewart Gladstone, the scholar Adamantios Korais, the first governor of Greece Ioannis Kapodistrias, politician and strategist Rigas Feraios and finally Gregory the Fifth, the Patriarch of Constantinople.

Pass by

Admire the National Library of Athens, constructed during the last decade of the 19th century with the purpose of preserving the intellectual heritage of Greece. Its building features a splendid blend of Doric elements, minimalist aesthetics, and simple, straight lines that create a beautiful contrast with the impressive Renaissance-style staircase that leads up to the entrance. Parts of the National Library of Athens were built with the famous white Pentelic marble, the same material that was used in the construction of some of the city’s most important monuments that date back to the 5th century like the Parthenon and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. Until recently, in 2017, the National Library was in charge of safeguarding, preserving, and exhibiting over 2 million books, manuscripts, and periodicals.

Pass by

The Zappeion is a large, palatial building next to the National Gardens of Athens in the heart of Athens. It is generally used for meetings and ceremonies, both official and private and is one of the city's most renowned modern landmarks.

20 min

The only stadium in the world built entirely of marble. The Stadium hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896

CONSISTENT/FRIENDLY

I haven't been in Athens for many years,so I chose to have a city tour right after our arrival at the airport. Our driver was on time and the vehicle (a minivan, as we are a family of 5) was very comfortable and clean. The route was sufficient for me to remember the city where I was born and for my children to get a first touch with their greek origins .The Acropolis, magical as always, and the Marble stadium are a must see for everyone! It has been a five-star service for me. I have already booked a day tour to Delphi ,so i will be back for that! Ευχαριστώ!

Operator response
