Private Bars & Dinner by Train from Shinjuku with Ex-JR Conductor

Description

Ride by train with a former conductor into the local night drinking scene along the JR Chuo Line. Tonight’s “passengers” are limited to 4 guests. This is not simply about visiting bars. This is a local night experience that brings you closer to how people in Tokyo move through the city by train at night and casually stop for a drink along the way. With Samurai Guide Sho, a former JR Chuo Line conductor who worked on trains for 22 years, travel comfortably from Shinjuku on a JR Chuo Line Green Car (premium seating) and escape beyond the crowded usual sightseeing areas. The stage is the local nightlife along the JR Chuo Line, a route Samurai Guide Sho watched from the train for 22 years as a conductor. Depending on the flow of the evening, venue availability and guest preferences, the tour flexibly combines carefully selected spots such as: ・a retro alley of small drinking spots ・a small neighborhood izakaya ・a nigiri sushi spot run by skilled sushi chefs ・a Japanese craft beer bar

Tour Options

Private Bars & Dinner by Train from Shinjuku with Ex-JR Conductor

Itinerary

5 min

The tour begins at JR Shinjuku Station. Samurai Guide Sho, a former JR Chuo Line conductor who worked on trains for about 22 years until March 31, 2026, will guide you smoothly through the complex station and assist with purchasing Green Car tickets. The journey begins before you even arrive at the first bar. You will board the JR Chuo Line Green Car (premium seating) and travel west toward Kichijoji. The evening train ride itself is an important part of the experience. As the scenery gradually changes outside the window, the journey builds anticipation for the Chuo Line night ahead.

40 min

1st Stop: Chuo Line Drinking Alley The Chuo Line night begins in a retro drinking alley. In this narrow maze of small places, you will enjoy local-style food and a drink while stepping into a side of Tokyo that feels different from the usual sightseeing areas. Because the tour is limited to 4 guests, it is easier to enter smaller places that large groups may find difficult to visit.

40 min

2nd Stop: Another Side of the Neighborhood Rather than staying in one place, the tour continues through the neighborhood. Depending on the night, Samurai Guide Sho may combine craft beer, sushi, small local drinking spots, or other selected places along the JR Chuo Line. As each stop changes, the food, drinks, atmosphere, and mood of the neighborhood also change little by little.

40 min

3rd Stop: Final Drink or Sushi Depending on the flow of the night, there may be a third stop. The evening may end with sushi, a final drink, or another small stop that suits the mood of the night. Rather than simply moving from bar to bar, the focus is on taking your time and enjoying the Chuo Line night until the end.

5 min

End of the Tour After experiencing the Chuo Line night, the tour ends at the nearest station. If needed, Samurai Guide Sho will help you find the right train platform or route back toward Shinjuku, Shibuya, or other areas. Rather than simply visiting sightseeing spots, you leave with the feeling of having stepped a little closer to how people in Tokyo spend their nights.

Exploring Kichijoji with a Modern Samurai

I was drawn to the idea of a samurai guide when I previously joined Sho’s Mt. Takao hiking tour. The time I spent with Sho, a modern-day samurai, was so enjoyable that this time I decided to have him guide me through the town of Kichijoji. Sho’s calm presence felt once again like that of a samurai on his day off. There is something reassuring about the way he carries himself. Visiting restaurants in an unfamiliar place can be surprisingly nerve-wracking, especially those with a great atmosphere. But this time, I knew I was in good hands with a samurai guide. Sho smoothly led us into a yakitori restaurant. The counter seating surrounded the kitchen, allowing us to watch the chef grill right in front of us, which was fascinating. We enjoyed a variety of dishes including yakitori, fried foods, motsuni (stewed offal), and even a simple snack like kaki-no-tane. Everything was delicious. One dish that stood out was a white yakitori. When I asked what it was, I learned it was chicken thigh. I was surprised by how incredibly good such a familiar cut of meat could be. The chef’s skill, the atmosphere of the place, and Sho’s guidance all came together to make it a memorable experience. There was also a wide selection of craft beers, making it hard to choose. Whenever I hesitated, Sho gave thoughtful advice or asked the staff for recommendations. He was a truly reliable guide. In the latter half of the tour, the food was so good and the conversation so engaging that I completely forgot to take photos. Time flew by before I realized it. To me, a modern samurai turned out to be a very dependable and thoughtful trip advisor. Thank you, Samurai. Thank you, Sho.

Operator response

Thank you so much for your heartfelt review. It made me very happy to spend another memorable time with you, this time in Kichijoji, after sharing the Mt. Takao tour before. I am truly glad to hear that you felt comfortable entering the restaurants, enjoying the food and craft beer at a relaxed pace, and trusting me whenever you needed suggestions or recommendations from the staff. It means a lot to know that the yakitori, the variety of dishes, the atmosphere of the places, and the flow of conversation all came together so naturally that you even forgot to take photos. I also feel deeply honored that you joined me again after Mt. Takao, and that you ended your review with the words, “Thank you, Samurai. Thank you, Sho.” Thank you again from the bottom of my heart, and I truly hope we can meet again someday.

Like Drinking with a Local Friend

From the first stop, it was clear that Sho has a great relationship with the staff. We were welcomed warmly everywhere, and it made us feel comfortable right away. At each place, Sho chose wonderful dishes, and we picked our own drinks to match them. He never pushed “the right answer,” but gave gentle suggestions when we were unsure. That made pairing fun, even for beginners. Sho also helped connect everyone, so conversations with other guests felt natural and easy. By the end of the night, it felt less like joining a tour and more like having drinks with a close local friend. That’s probably why the night felt so special.

Operator response

Thank you so much for your heartfelt review. I am very happy to hear that you felt comfortable from the very first stop, and that the warm welcome from the staff helped make the whole evening feel relaxed and natural. It means a lot to know that you enjoyed pairing the dishes and drinks in your own way, without feeling that there was a single “right answer.” I am also glad that my small suggestions and help connecting everyone made the conversations feel easy and natural throughout the night. Hearing that the experience felt less like joining a tour and more like having drinks with a close local friend means a great deal to me. Thank you again from my heart, and I truly hope we can share another evening in Kichijoji someday.

Very Enjoyable and Easygoing Evening

I had a great time on this Kichijoji tour. Even though the area was crowded, meeting Sho was very easy. His samurai outfit made him stand out right away, so we could find each other without any stress. What impressed me most was Sho’s relationship with the local shops. You could tell he is genuinely welcomed by the staff, and the atmosphere felt warm and relaxed from the start. Sho is very friendly and easy to talk to. It quickly felt less like a tour and more like hanging out with a local friend. He naturally helped connect us with the shop staff and local customers, which made the experience feel very real and personal. I don’t know much about alcohol, but that wasn’t a problem at all. Sho suggested pairings in a very natural way, and everything made sense and tasted great. The food was excellent. His recommendations featured local ingredients, and we enjoyed a full variety — yakitori, Western-style dishes, and sushi. By the end, I was completely full and very satisfied. If you want a relaxed, friendly, and truly local food experience in Tokyo, I would definitely recommend this tour.

It means a great deal to me that you felt the warm atmosphere not only through the food and drinks, but also through the natural connection with the shop staff and local customers. I am also very glad that you were able to enjoy the pairings without needing special knowledge about alcohol, and that the whole experience felt natural and comfortable. Hearing that the variety of dishes, from yakitori to Western-style plates and sushi, left you full and satisfied makes me very happy as well. I feel honored that the evening felt less like a tour and more like spending time with a local friend. Thank you again from my heart, and I truly hope we can share another night in Kichijoji someday.

A Perfect Night in Kichijoji

We started in Harmonica Yokocho with yakitori and sake. It was lively, warm, and full of energy. Sho welcomed us calmly in his indigo haori, and guided us through the night in a very quiet, respectful way. For the second stop, we went to a calm craft beer bar. The beer was poured fresh from the tap, and we had great dishes with lots of Tokyo-grown vegetables. The last stop was a quiet sushi restaurant. Simple, peaceful, and the perfect way to end the night. I loved how the night flowed from lively to calm, almost like a small journey. Sho never rushed us. He watched the atmosphere and moved us at the right moment. It felt less like joining a tour, and more like being gently led by a modern samurai through the city. I really enjoyed this experience.

Operator response

I am truly happy to hear that you enjoyed the flow of the evening, from the lively energy of Harmonica Yokocho to the calm craft beer bar and the quiet sushi restaurant at the end. What I hope to offer is not simply a tour of Kichijoji at night, but a small journey that moves naturally with the atmosphere of each place. It means a great deal to me that you felt that flow and also noticed the quiet and respectful way I guided the evening. Thank you again for joining my tour. I would be very happy to share another night in Tokyo with you someday.

A heartwarming TOKYO experience I have never known

KICHIJYOJI is a popular area among young people in TOKYO. Nowadays, Japanese young people don't have the habit of going out drinking, and there aren't many people in drinking districts. It may be a little lonely, but that also means you can enjoy a calm atmosphere. Your guide, Sho, is loved by everyone in the Kichijoji area. You might just make some truly Japanese friends on this tour. There's a wide variety of beer and the food is homemade.

Operator response

Thank you so much for your warm and thoughtful review. Kichijoji is not a typical tourist area. It is a living town with real people, real stories, and real connections. I’m very happy that you could feel its calm atmosphere and local spirit. For me, this tour is not just about drinking. It’s about walking together, talking, and sharing small moments. I’m truly grateful that you joined my journey. Hope we can walk and drink together again someday. Samurai Guide Sho

Reserved seats and a perfect introduction to Harmonica Yokocho

A bar in Harmonica Yokocho had reserved seating in a great spot, allowing us to fully enjoy the lively alley atmosphere. The samurai-style outfit of Samurai Guide Sho matched the retro setting perfectly. The Western-style dishes made with Japanese ingredients were delicious. There was a wide selection of Japanese whisky, so it never felt repetitive. It was a great way to experience the nightlife of Kichijoji.

Craft beer, local flavors, and an excellent sushi finish

One stop featured many taps, offering a wide variety of Japanese craft beers. Samurai Guide Sho was friendly with the staff, which made the experience feel relaxed and welcoming. Japanese craft gin, sake, and other drinks were also available, and the gin and tonic was especially good. At a sushi restaurant, seasonal assorted sushi was hand-pressed by the chef and tasted excellent. With generous portions throughout the tour, it was very filling and satisfying.

Operator response

Thank you very much for your wonderful review. I’m very happy to hear you enjoyed the variety of Japanese craft beers, the relaxed atmosphere, and the sushi at the end of the tour. It also means a lot to know that my connection with the local staff helped make the experience feel welcoming and comfortable. Kichijoji is a town best enjoyed slowly, through good drinks, good food, and good conversation, so I’m glad you could feel that spirit during the evening. Thank you again for joining my tour, and I hope to see you again in Tokyo someday.

A Side of Kichijoji Only Locals Know

Kichijoji is such a cool neighborhood, and this tour showed me sides of it I would never see on my own. We visited hidden alleys, small bars, and lively food spots — the kind of local experience you’ll never get from typical tourist tours. Sho (the Samurai guide) made everything easy and fun. He knows the owners, the menus, and the history behind each place. It felt more like hanging out with a local friend rather than joining a tour. I joined alone, but I felt completely comfortable the whole night. The drinks, the food, the atmosphere, and the people were all amazing. If you want a truly local Tokyo night, this is the one. Highly recommended!

The Best Craft Beer We Would’ve Never Found on Our Own

We absolutely loved this tour. Sho took us to a local craft beer bar that we would never have discovered by ourselves, and the fresh draft beer there was incredible. The atmosphere felt so local and authentic, and we enjoyed learning about the neighborhood while walking between spots. It didn’t feel touristy at all — just a genuine experience with great drinks and great company.

Thank you very much for your wonderful review. I’m so glad you enjoyed the local craft beer bar and the authentic atmosphere of the neighborhood. One of the things I value most on this tour is sharing places that are not easy to find on your own, so I’m very happy to hear that this part of the experience stayed with you. I’m also glad you enjoyed learning about Kichijoji while walking between the different spots. For me, the streets, the small stories, and the feeling of the town are just as important as the food and drinks. Thank you again for joining my tour, and I hope to share another local evening with you in Tokyo someday.

I joined Sho’s Kichijoji bar tour and I had a really good time. Sho is very kind and easy to talk to. He explained Japanese culture in simple English, so I could understand well. We visited small local bars and the atmosphere was very nice. The food and drinks were delicious too. I want to join his tour again next time I come to Tokyo!
