The Giza Plateau is located just outside Cairo and is home to Egypt’s most famous monuments: The Great Pyramid of Khufu, The Pyramid of Khafre, The Pyramid of Menkaure, The Great Sphinx, And several valley temples. It was built over 4,500 years ago and served as a royal burial site. Today, it’s one of the world’s top tourist destinations and a symbol of ancient Egyptian civilization.
The Great Pyramid of Giza, also known as Khufu’s Pyramid, is the largest and oldest of the three pyramids on the Giza Plateau. Built over 4,500 years ago during the reign of Pharaoh Khufu, it originally stood about 146 meters tall. It is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing today. The pyramid was constructed using millions of limestone blocks and served as a royal tomb.
The Second Pyramid at Giza belongs to Pharaoh Khafre, the son of Khufu. It appears taller than the Great Pyramid because it is built on higher ground, but it is actually slightly smaller (about 136 meters high). It is known for still having some of its original limestone casing near the top and is located near the Great Sphinx, which is also believed to be built by Khafre.
The Third Pyramid of Giza belongs to Pharaoh Menkaure, the grandson of Khufu. It is the smallest of the three, standing about 65 meters tall. Despite its size, it is known for its elegant design and was once partially covered with red granite. It is surrounded by three smaller queen’s pyramids nearby.
A panoramic view of the Giza Pyramids offers a stunning scene of all three pyramids — Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure — standing in a row on the desert plateau. From certain angles, you can also see the Great Sphinx and Cairo’s skyline in the distance. It’s one of the most iconic and photographed views in the world, especially at sunrise or sunset. The Great Sphinx of Giza is a massive limestone statue with the body of a lion and the head of a pharaoh, believed to represent King Khafre. It is about 73 meters long and 20 meters high, making it one of the largest and oldest statues in the world. The Sphinx stands guard near Khafre’s pyramid and is a symbol of strength and wisdom in ancient Egyptian culture.

We had an amazing tour with our tour guide Ahmed Magdy. He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and made the whole experience enjoyable from start to finish. We visited the Giza Pyramids and had plenty of time to explore without feeling rushed, which made a big difference. One of the highlights was entering the pyramid from the inside — such an unforgettable experience! We also enjoyed a camel ride, which was truly fun and unique. Visiting the Great Sphinx of Giza was another incredible moment. Honestly, the pyramids are even more impressive in real life than in photos. Unknown in Japan, it is overwhelming to visit. However, moving around the pyramids is tough even for me, who play sports every day, and you should be prepared to go in if you are elderly or don't usually exercise. My tour guide, ibrahim, works hard with me to explain things to me, which helps me to have a better image of Egypt.
