Itinerary
This is a must-see! The oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo, it’s surrounded by bustling shopping arcades and narrow streets with local stores selling all sorts of hand-made crafts and delicacies. Buff young men and game young women operate rickshaw and you’ll see plenty of folk dressed in kimono, it’s a great spot for pictures!
This area is very Tokyo, packed with all sorts of electronics and anime stores, game centres, and “maid cafes”, it’s something you won’t find anywhere else in the world. We could also make a stop at Mitsukoshi department store on the way down to the fish market, it’s a grand building with French and Italian marble under the skylit ceiling, it was once home to a baby elephant!
The old fish market is no longer, however people still love to visit the “outer" market - a small area packed with little restaurants and an endless array of street foods, not just seafood but wagyu, seasonal fruits, etc. If you prefer, the Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai at the new market is more focussed on sit-down eating and also has a variety of options.
Next we will drive through the outer gardens of the Imperial Residence, being that the royal family still lives there and the residence is purposefully hidden from view it isn’t possible to see the building itself but you will love the immaculately sculpted trees and view of the stone bridges. We’ll also drive past a few more significant sites on the way to the next stop.
Yes, it’s another shrine! But this one is surrounded by a lush forest of over 100,000 trees and 170 acres! It’s a peaceful respite from the busy streets of Tokyo. Built for the souls of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Shoken, it’s a great place to pray for a good relationship and recharge your battery before the next stop.
This is a funky area full of all sorts of fashion, street foods (crepes are a big deal, also strawberries and candy apples) and now animal cafes. Gwen Stefani famously loved Harajuku fashion and while fashions change this is still the place to see what’s hot in Tokyo.
If you loved Fast and Furious, Lost in Translation or Hachi: A Dog’s Tale, you need to make a stop at the world famous Shibuya crossing. If you have no idea what I’m talking about you should probably still visit and witness the madness that is Shibuya crossing!

Was able to tour east and west part of Tokyo in 8 The tour guide Rich was so good and informative about Japan. Was lucky to watch festival in Senso ji temple happened on that day and in Meiji Jingu was able to witness a local wedding being held that day. Rich out guide explained to us and very accommodating to our needs as we are all seniors and one person has mobility issues
Thanks Aileen! It was a little tricky with the Sanja Matsuri taking place but we're so glad you got to see something special. We hope Ronnie wasn't too worn out, even though we try to reduce walking as much as possible Tokyo can still be demanding
Great overview of Tokyo. Our guide Rich was very friendly and knowledgeable. We appreciated the ability to explore on our own at each location. As a huge fan of sushi, the options at the fish market were tremendous and the street food was excellent. I highly recommend!!!
Thanks so much Victor! We're glad you and Nancy had a great time and maybe on your way through next time we can show you even more of Tokyo
Rich was an excellent local guide. He knew all the neighborhoods we should visit and entertained us with history during the drive. We feel we saw a good representation of all Tokyo has to offer in his safe, comfortable, and clean minivan.
Hi Julie, thanks for the review! We had fun showing you around, hopefully you got to see Mt Fuji and we wish you a great cruise!
If you are new to Japan, or returning for another tour, we highly recommend Rich. He was very knowledgeable and spoke English. Rich provided abundant information, drove us to the main attractions and recommended a great restaurant in the Fish Market. We had a wonderful experience exploring Tokyo. Highly recommend Rich, our tour guide.
Thanks so much for taking the time to write a review, Orysia! We're glad you enjoyed the tour and we hope you have a fantastic cruise, by the end of your stay I'm sure you'll be eating chicken sashimi!
Rich did a great job showing us around Tokyo. He went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience. We would recommend him wholeheartedly.
Thank you, Michael! It was pleasure showing you around and getting you to the snow moneys turned out to be breeze, we hope you get a clear view of Mt Fuji today to top off your time here!
This was hands down one of the best tours I have ever done. Rich was an incredible guide who took us to all the key locations in Tokyo in just one day! Not only did he have fantastic knowledge of the historical sites and landmarks, but his deep understanding of Japanese culture gave us a truly authentic glimpse into local life. Rich was friendly, accommodating and passionate about sharing his city - we couldn't have asked for a better experience!
Thanks so much for the glowing review, Sasha! We had a great time showing your family around Tokyo, we hope you found a couple of restaurants that everyone was happy with!
Rich was awesome! I was expecting more of a driver with limited English but Rich was native English speaker with tons of information and suggestions. We had already done two of the proposed stops so we changed and added stops to fit our needs and Rich offered great suggestions and history of the area. Wonderful day for our family.
Hi Travis, thanks for the review! We're really glad you enjoyed the tour and hope your family have a safe flight home, Owen and Charlotte were good fun and we hope to see them again!
Rich was absolutely fantastic! Personable and knowledgeable about the area and fun history. This was our second time in Japan and he easily adjusted to take us places we hadn’t been before. Even knew where to find the cool cars my teenage daughter wanted to see. Car was comfy and he was always prompt and polite. Even sent some recommendations for the rest of our stay. Highly recommend!
Thanks Melissa! We're really glad you enjoyed the day and that we were able to show Zoe some cool cars! Have a great trip and don't hesitate to get in touch if there's anything you need
Rich was great! He was punctual, knowledgeable, friendly, and flexible. His car is impeccable. We really enjoyed having this private tour. Totally recommendable if you need a private tour of Tokyo.
Thanks for the kind words, Richard! We really enjoyed showing you and Doris around and hope to see again in the future!
Rich made this tour thoroughly enjoyable. He catered to the needs and limitations of 2 travel weary and mobility restricted travellers. We got to see much more of Tokyo than we would have on our own. He even got us to a street lined with Cherry blossoms in full bloom that didn’t have hoards of tourists. He carefully managed to get the car to the front of the line to watch the madness of the Shibuya crossing. Can’t recommend him enough.
Hi Perry, we're so glad that you and Rose enjoyed your tour! You really did get the peak of the cherry blossoms because now it's raining in Tokyo, thanks so much for choosing to tour with us!
