A Fantastic Trip

If you like birds, you’ll love this trip! Mohamed is very knowledgeable about the birds of Faiyum and where to find them. He even wrote about them and gave me a copy! I saw several new species for me, such as the beautiful White Breasted Kingfisher, a gorgeous turquoise little guy, and the brilliant African Green Bee-Eater. We also saw stilts, wagtails, lapwings, stilts, larks, doves and more. It was interesting driving through the small towns and see the markets, people cutting fodder for livestock and loading it sweet donkeys. We had lunch at a lovely spot that had a nice pottery shop. It was too windy to go out on the lake to see the flamingos, but there was so much to see that it turned out great. Mohamed was a wonderful host. He arrived to pick up early and took great care of me!

An incomparable and perfect trip thanks to Mohamed Ashmawy

Here is a fantastic tour guide, Mohamed Ashmawy, a highly professional and experienced guide who has mastered all aspects of his profession. He is also an ornithologist who has published a book on the birds of Egypt. He opens every door and has a perfect understanding of the Western mindset. He is extremely serious, courteous, perfectly honest, punctual, always on time, very helpful, very patient, always ready to please, and so serious and responsible. He always strives to guide and advise you with tact and elegance. Moreover, he is extraordinarily generous, even contributing from his own pocket. This is my fifth trip to Egypt, and I have never met anyone so selfless and who never pushes you to consume or spend unnecessarily. He is so considerate and respectful that I can only recommend him with the assurance of immense satisfaction. I spent several days with him and went on very long excursions, and he was always polite, courteous, very generous, and careful not to incur unnecessary expenses. A true gem. Traveling with him is like traveling with your best friend. Furthermore, I've driven thousands of kilometers with him, and he was a perfect driver: safe, very careful, and attentive, always ensuring my safety and comfort. I have never felt better understood by an Egyptian guide than with Mohamed. It was a great pleasure to have met him through a friend who traveled with him in Egypt seven years ago. My next trip to Egypt will definitely be with Mohamed! To be continued and repeated a thousand times!

A Long Day But Worth It.

We saw lots of birds and Ashy was kind enough to supply me with a copy of his book with it's beautiful photos. We also had a good lunch at a nice place to end the day. I enjoyed seeing some of Egypt outside of the big city too.

Full-day birdwatching at Fayoum

Before coming to Egypt, I was looking for a one day birding excursion prior to my organized trip. Through Tripadvisor, such a tour was available to go to Fayoum. This was a spendid day, the guide was on time and the birds were there as this is part of the migration period. The guide was knowledgeable of the area and brought me to good birding locations throughout the oasis in and around Qarum lake. I would recommend this tour if you are in Cairo, even if your not that keen on birding, just to visit this beautiful area of Egypt. A successful day tour thanks to Mr Mohamed Ashmawy.

Great Birding Tour

A great birdwatching experience in a much, much quieter part of Egypt than Cairo or Alexandria. Ashy did a great job getting us to the best spots to see birds and helping both spot and identify them. We also enjoyed a lunch with views of the Nile, and easy transport to and from Cairo. Highly recommend!

Great experience including flamingo

This was a great opportunity to see local birds in unconventional places along the roadside. Mohamed was knowledgeable and focused to make this a good experience to see a wide variety of birds. The flamingos were a sight to behold in the Qaroun Protected Area. We ended the experience with fresh squeezed juice at a local restaurant before the drive back to Giza.

An expensive drive to Fayoum without a bird guide.

Be warned, this is not a birdwatching tour. We were expecting a tour to see the birds of Fayoum with a guide knowledgeable of the birds of the area. Unfortunately our guide had no knowledge of the birds, he only knew a few of the sites that the tour is supposed to stop at for birds. We were given a paper with a few birds found in the area that is full of errors. We were told to tell the guide when we wanted to stop along the way to look for birds. For the price of this tour, a knowledgable bird guide should be expected, with knowledge of the area and places to stop for target species. Our guide made the most of the situation and did his best to help us have a good time include taking us for falafel and coffee, which was very enjoyable. That is why I rated the tour 2 stars rather than 1. Otherwise, for bird watching we could have had the same experience for much cheaper taking an Uber or hiring a driver to drive us along the lake shore of Fayoum, as we had to pick the stops and find all the birds ourselves using out own abilities and research. This was a huge disappointment and the biggest waste of money on our entire trip

Operator response

Dear James, during your tour and after you have seen a lot of available birds on that day in the whole area open for visitors at "Quaron lake" and hiking around special farmland on the coast of the lake, away from the road after we got special permission we got from the guard of it only for our guest, and you asked for more excursions is not mentioned in our tour itinerary like, to go for waterfalls of wadi el Rayan, then you asked to go to the valley of the whale, then you asked to go by boat to another side of the lake, and actually all of this kind of excursions are not included your trip and we never mentioned in our tour itinerary and has another cost may be double or triple of your tour cost. then asked for lunch, even when you asked about the name of the bird "Black-winged still" and our guide answered, you told him is the wrong name he opens for you our flyer bird list and he told you, the bird is recorded as "number 33" in our flyer list to be sure this is the correct name, and you told him "it is okay but it is has a different name". Finally, you asked to find migrated bird "common kingfisher" and actually is not his season now, and you never accept that. so you tried to exaction to get your money after you did your tour. sorry, for felafel in the morning of the day, snacks during the day, and evening coffee is the kind of hospitality we always do for our guests. but we never accept exaction. and thank you for your review with 2 stars.
