Nezu Shrine is one of Tokyo's oldest and most beautiful Shinto shrines, offering a serene escape in the Yanaka district. Established in 1705, its well-preserved buildings are a testament to traditional Edo-period architecture and have been designated as Important Cultural Properties.
Yanaka is one of the few districts in Tokyo that miraculously survived the bombings of World War II, preserving an old-town atmosphere known as shitamachi. This charming neighborhood offers a refreshing contrast to the city's modern, fast-paced center.
Yanaka Ginza is a charming, old-fashioned shopping street in Tokyo's Yanaka district, known for its nostalgic shitamachi (downtown) atmosphere. Stretching for about 170 meters, this lively pedestrian street is lined with around 70 small, family-run shops and food stalls. It's a fantastic place to experience a slice of old Tokyo, with vendors selling traditional Japanese snacks, local sweets, crafts, and groceries
Yanakado Nekoemon Café is a unique and charming cafe in the heart of Tokyo's Yanaka district. Housed in a beautifully renovated 90-year-old Japanese home, this is not a typical cat cafe with live cats. Instead, it offers a creative and relaxing experience centered on the neighborhood's beloved feline residents and folklore.
Nippori Fabric Town is a mecca for designers, tailors, and craft enthusiasts from around the world. Located just a short walk from Nippori Station, this bustling district is a kilometer-long stretch of over 90 specialty stores.

Much more than a food tour! We had a great day out with Kato-san touring Yanaka, a quiet neighborhood that evokes old Tokyo. Lots of temples and some great Sushi at a local izakaya followed by A5 wagyu with all the fixings at a yakiniku. It was a really nice slice of old (quiet) Tokyo within walking distance of Nippori and Ueno. Highly recommended!!
