Alexandria’s ancient library was one of the greatest of all classical institutions, and while replacing it might seem a Herculean task, the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina manages this with aplomb. Opened in 2002, this impressive piece of modern architecture is a deliberate attempt to rekindle the brilliance of the original centre of learning and culture. The complex has become one of Egypt’s major cultural venues and a stage for numerous international performers, and is home to a collection of brilliant museums.
The Roman Amphitheatre of Alexandria was discovered by mere coincidence in the year 1960. When the workers went to remove a pile of dust and sand in 1960 to clear the land for the construction of a governmental building, they found some solid iron columns, indicating that something may be buried underneath. Immediately afterward, the excavation work began in the location of Kom El Dekka and it was carried out by the Greco Roman Museum and the Polish Excavation Mission in Egypt sponsored by the University of Warsaw. Shortly afterward, the excavation revealed one of the most important discoveries in Egypt in the 20th century. The Usage of the Roman Amphitheatre in Different Periods of Time.
Discovered accidentally in 1900 when a donkey disappeared through the ground, these catacombs make up the largest-known Roman burial site in Egypt and one of the last major works of construction dedicated to the religion of ancient Egypt. Demonstrating Alexandria’s hallmark fusion of Pharaonic and Greek styles, the architects used a Graeco-Roman approach. The catacombs consist of three tiers of tombs and chambers cut into bedrock to a depth of 35m (the bottom level is flooded and inaccessible).
A massive 30m column looms over the debris of the glorious ancient settlement of Rhakotis, the original township from which Alexandria grew. Known as Pompey’s Pillar, for centuries the column, hewn from red Aswan granite, has been one of the city’s prime sights: a single, tapered shaft, 2.7m at its base and capped by a fine Corinthian capital. The column rises out of the sparse ruins of the Temple of Serapeum, a magnificent structure that stood here in ancient times.
The Citadel of Qaitbay is a 15th century defensive fortress located on the Mediterranean sea coast. The Qaitbay Citadel in Alexandria is considered one of the most important defensive strongholds, not only in Egypt, but also along the Mediterranean Sea coast. It was erected on the exact site of the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It formulated an important part of the fortification system of Alexandria in the 15th century AD.

A fantastic day trip to Alexandria with Mario, a trip to remember and highly recommended. Excellent lunch and local delicacies that Mario introduced us to.
We had a great trip to Alexandria with two Marios. Mario our driver was absolutely unflappable and calm in some tight squeezes and other unusual (for us) road circumstances. We were totally comfortable with him driving. Mario our guide was the best. He tailored the trip to our interest, but also had good suggestions on what to see and do. He is also very knowledgeable about his country, its history and current events. All in all a very enjoyable day.
Tour guide Mario was excellent and driver Mario was great managing difficult traffic conditions. We would recommend both gentlemen highly!
Our guide Egyptologist, HODA, is well versed about Egypt. Apart from that, she is sensitive to our needs, makes us comfortable, makes sure that we got the most of our time in Alexandria. She is happy to oblige our request for more time to take pictures, to add a boat ride to our itinerary. She also takes great pictures.
