The Canal connects the Gulf of Corinth in the Ionian Sea with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland, arguably making the peninsula an island.

Ancient Corinth was a city-state on the Isthmus of Corinth, one of the most famous and visited cities of Greece. The city is located in the South West of the Peloponnese surrounded by mountains that take their name from the ancient town. The most renowned monuments are: Temple of Apollo, Bema of Saint Paul and Roman Odeon.
