We booked tickets for the Colosseum/Forum Romanum in Rome for 4 people. The booking went smoothly, and the payment via PayPal was immediately processed. We then received vouchers, which we were to exchange for tickets on-site. 24 hours before our tour, Viator canceled due to overbooking! That alone is already annoying, but the cancellation was only communicated through the messaging function in the app. We only found this by chance when we wanted to pick up tickets on-site the day before and were looking for help in the app. No call - no email - nothing! The supposedly great customer service was, of course, never reachable, just a recorded message promising a callback (spoiler: the callback never came). And the best part comes now: another 8 hours later, we suddenly received an email stating that OUR cancellation is accepted, but we have to bear the costs. Excuse me, what?? Not only did we have two sad children during our trip to Rome who could only view the Colosseum from the outside—because new tickets on-site were, of course, sold out—but we are also arguing over the €152 for which we obviously received no service. Now we are being bombarded with emails every day asking why we opened a PayPal case. Of course, we forwarded all evidence, screenshots, etc. to Viator only to receive the standard email in response, asking why we want a refund. ???? We seem to be going in circles! Stay away from Viator!
The tour was canceled at the last minute. We have not received any information about the refund process to date.
Our ticket for today (28.10.2025) was cancelled at short notice yesterday at noon by the tour operator 'Weekend in Italy', with the note that we should contact Viator directly for a full refund. While the refund worked without any problems, we were not told why the cancellation was made in the first place. Through detours we later learned that the Colosseum was closed due to an international meeting for dialogue and prayer for peace organized by the city of Rome. This event takes place in the presence of Pope Francis and has led to the complete closure of the Colosseum and the Roman Forum to the public, according to the order of the Police Bureau of the City of Rome. Too bad that the organizer did not communicate this in advance. So we had to reschedule our day at short notice. A brief piece of information would have been enough to avoid misunderstandings. Although I now award only three stars (only referring to whether I recommend THIS experience to my friends), I must confess that I would choose 'Weekend in Italy' again. Everyone starts at the bottom and I give every newbie a chance.
