Itinerary
Meet with your expert local guide in Syntagma Square, in front of the illuminated building that houses the Greek parliament. Walk down the busy Amalias Avenue and continue to the warmly-lit streets that will lead you to the best of what Athens has to offer!
Stop and marvel at the Temple of Olympian Zeus from the outside while your guide narrates stories of Emperors under the grandiose Arch of Hadrian.
Next up is the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates, where your insightful guide will educate you on the origins and the history of drama in ancient Greece. Witnessing this bright example of ancient Greek culture will help you get a better grasp of the stories you're about to listen.
Leaving the Choradic Monument of Lysicrates behind, you will be lead to the picturesque neighborhood of Plaka, one of the oldest and most beloved neighborhoods in Athens. Wander around its picture-perfect alleys and check out the small cafes and restaurants that decorate this magical part of the city.
After Plaka, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a night view to the majestic Acropolis of Athens and the sweetly lit Roman Agora from the outside, built between 19 and 11 B.C. with a donation of Julius Caesar and Augustus.
Afterward, get the chance to admire the illuminated Tower of the Winds, the first weather station in history with stunning architecture while hearing about the history of the monuments through the years.
Descend towards Monastiraki and reach the oldest square in Athens, Monastiraki Square. Full of life and history, discover the historic monuments that integrate Athens' past with its present. Take a look at the Tzistarakis Mosque, Hadrian's Library and Pantanassa church, all monuments from different time periods, and turn your head towards the famous Monastiraki Flea Market, the best place to buy your souvenirs from. From there, walk along Adrianou Str., see the Ancient Market and the Stoa of Attalos, while learning about tales behind Areopagus, the place that used to host the supreme court of ancient Athens.
Last but not least, you will round up your tour in Psirri, the colorful and alternative Athenian neighborhood that is home to neoclassical houses, local cafes, bars, small restaurants, and local bars that give life to the Athenian nightlife! Bid your evening adventure goodbye in the company of among friendly locals for a traditional Greek 'meze' dinner, accompanied traditional Greek liquors or wine. The delicious food and cheerful vibe will leave a smile on your face!

Great experience and highly recommend tour of Athens sites, history, culture, and finished with a wonderful dinner. Our guide, Penelope, gave us an expertly delivered tour around the Plaka, Anafiotika, Monastiraki Square to mention a few. This tour is an absolutely must if you want to get to know the old city of Athens, it’s culture and history, and finish tour with an authentic meze dinner at a local favorite restaurant.
Hello Sonnyfoodietraveler, we are so glad you enjoyed your time with us in Athens. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this wonderful review. We hope to see you again soon on your next trip to Greece:)
Wow! So loved our Athens Highlight tour with Penelope! She is so delightful, personable and knowledgeable on so many various aspects of Grecian history, both recent and ancient. As a certified archeologist and tour guide she gracefully laid out our highlights tour in a very walkable and fascinating route through neighborhoods around the Acropolis. Very easy to understand and presented all the facts clearly and effectively so as not to lose the attention of my travel exhaust 13 year old child. For that, I am very grateful! Truly enjoyed seeing lots of historic landmarks and feeling grounded as to where I was in relation to our hotel. And the meze dinner.... wow! As my child is a very picky eater, Penelope was able to find a fantastic taverna that satisfied my desire for authentic Greek dishes and my child's desire for typical bland food. We were both quite satisfied and it is a meal I will always remember.. historic landmarks
Hello KE, Your kind words are the best reward we could hope for! We are glad you appreciated the skill and personality of Penelope. We aim to make our guests feel welcome while getting valuable insight into the history and culture of our country. Thank you for your positive feedback and we hope to see you and your child again in the near future!
My advice is, as soon as you arrive, book a tour with Greeking.me and get a solid foundation for your exploration of Athens for the week ahead. It seems that majority of tourists use Athens as a stopover on the way to the islands. As a result, they will see Acropolis and try gyros on Monastiraki square, while missing out on all the other treasures. We spent a whole week in Athens in October 2020 and this was not enough. There is so much to see in Athens museums and open air sites, you need at least a month to do this city justice. If you want to quickly determine which monuments you want to see up close and have an overall understanding of Athens history, an introductory tour in the first day or two on your holiday is a must. We booked Athens Higlights Evening Tour and our guide Penelope was an absolute delight. We spent more than 3 hours walking streets of Athens , absorbing history and ancient tales. Penelope was great at engaging my daughter, who is 9 and has Ancient Greece as part of her school curriculum this year, and making parallels with mythology. At each of the sites Penelope gave us detailed description of the history and background to the monument. She was able to show us on her iPad how some of the characters looked like , or how a certain temple or a building were used when they were first built. I thought iPad material was a great addition to a walking tour, especially for my daughter as it was much easier for her to imagine how things would have looked like when they were first built. We did not go inside any of the historical sites or buildings during the tour. However, with Penelope’s guidance we were able to determine which ones we wanted to visit during our stay in Athens and went there on other days. For example, Penelope pointed out a couple of churches, which she suggested we could visit during the day. We did come back to a couple of them later in a week, and I thought that Penelope’s recommendations were spot on. Overall, I could not think of better guide and a better organisation of the tour from Greeking. me. Booking process was straightforward and Greeking.me was always responsive on the emails. I thought the tour was a perfect start to our holiday in Athens and would definitely appeal to families with school aged kids.
Katya, Thank you for your detailed and flattering review. We are over the moon that you consider our ‘Athens Highlights Evening Tour with Meze Dinner’ tour ‘the best way to explore Athens’. This is all we can hope to achieve. We appreciate that you recognize the worth and beauty of Athens, and not misconceive it as a ‘stepping stone’ to the Greek islands. Penelope is an excellent guide full of knowledge, and her connection with kids is amazing to see! We are glad that her recommendations improved your trip and we will make sure she knows how you felt about her. When designing our trips, our motivation is the love we nurture for our country and the desire to communicate it to the rest of the world. Your review is the best reward we could ask for, especially during those difficult times. We hope to see you again as soon as possible and share with you even more of Greece’s beauties!

Eleni was a wonderful guide and made us feel instantly at home in Athens. We visited several of the same sites during the day after our evening tour and we all agreed that they are most beautiful at night. Eleni used her media device to add detail to her presentation and it really helped us understand the history better. The meal was great, too. Thanks for a great tour!

My tour guide, Elen,i did an awesome job showing me the beautiful historical sights and different parts of the city during our night walking tour. She was very knowledgeable of the history and great places to visit in the area. I’d recommend taking this tour the first day of your visit to get recommendations on things to see the remainder of your trip - which she recommended based on my interests. We finished the evening with a delicious meal where she recommended popular Greek dishes that I never would have thought to order. Thanks, Eleni!
