Description
Kumiko is a traditional Japanese woodworking art that creates intricate geometric patterns without the use of nails or glue. For centuries, this refined craft has been admired for its precision, elegance, and beauty. In this workshop, you will learn about the history of kumiko, as well as the craftsmanship and cultural significance behind it. You will then create your own traditional kumiko coaster using intricate wooden pieces meticulously crafted by skilled Japanese artisans. Made from high-quality hinoki cypress and cedar, these coasters allow you to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the wood, its texture and scent, and the delicate structure of the kumiko design. No prior woodworking experience is required. Your completed coaster can be taken home as a unique handmade souvenir and a lasting memory of your time in Japan.

This is not a class to try kumiko techniques or experience the modern manufacturing process, but rather a brief lesson on kumiko's current state as an art form (from a video & paper packet) followed by assembling pieces of a premade kit with the option to buy more premade coaster kits. The mother/son duo running this seemed to not know much about kumiko, if they do have a relation with the workshop producing the kits it seems like it is not a very involved one. I would not say it was worth the time/money out of my trip & was not what I was expecting/hoping from a class labeled as a traditional wood art class. The meet-up location was very convenient at least.
Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that our workshop did not meet your expectations. Our experience is designed as an introductory Kumiko cultural workshop, where guests learn about the history and beauty of Kumiko before creating a coaster using pre-cut pieces. We appreciate your interest in Kumiko and traditional Japanese craftsmanship, and we value your comments. Your feedback helps us improve both our workshop and the information we provide before booking.
One of the instructors met me at the meeting place exactly on time. The instructional video was very informative and the instructions I received we simple and helpful. I had plenty of time to make one kumiko project. Afterwards, I had a very nice conversation with them. I liked it so much, I purchased 3 additional kits to make on my own. I highly recommend this class!

I had a lovely time at Traditional Kumiko Woodwork making this intricate design known as Asanoha. Each piece was hand cut by a skilled craftsman and the workshop challenged me to understand the design and orientation. It was a beautiful display of the breathtaking depth and complexity of Japanese carpentry and woodworking. The class focuses on assembly of the pieces and also on some of the history of the various designs of kumiko. The staff is so warm and delighted to have you here and it adds tremendously to the experience. I absolutely loved their enthusiasm as the design made more and more sense to me. I would recommend this to anyone visiting Japan and intrigued by their rich history and designs.
