4-Day Private Sahara Desert Tour from Marrakech & Camel Trek

We did the 4-day Sahara tour from Marrakech with my wife and another couple and had a really great time. We’ve been to Morocco several times before and this ended up being one of our favorite experiences here. Big thanks to our driver Mohammed, who honestly made the trip. Four days in a car sounds like a lot, but he made it easy and fun the whole time. Super friendly guy, always checking if we were comfortable, stopping whenever we wanted photos or coffee, and explaining things along the way without it ever feeling forced or “tour guidey.” I’m a photographer so I was especially excited for the landscapes, and the drive did not disappoint. The Atlas Mountains, small towns, desert roads, all of it was beautiful. Mohammed even pulled over at a few random spots he thought I’d like for photos and some of those ended up being my favorite shots of the trip. The camel ride into the dunes around sunset was honestly surreal. The desert camp was also much nicer than we expected. Overall the whole thing felt very relaxed and personal instead of rushed. If you do this tour, definitely ask for Mohammed.

I booked a 4 day private tour with Ali after reading the great reviews. The itinerary included the High Atlas Mnts, Ait Ben Haddou, Dades Valley and Gorge, Monkey Fingers, Tadrart bends, a night in a camp on the edge of the Sahara sand dunes with a sunset camel ride which we were not particularly looking forward to but much to our surprise was spectacular and unforgettable then back to Marrakech through the lower Atlas Mnts but we covered so much more! The booking was with Ali over Whats App who was friendly, swift to reply to any questions, efficient and professional. A deposit is payable which was easily paid through a Wise account with the balance payable on the tour. We were very lucky to have Houssaine as our guide and driver who met us at our Marrakech Riad on the first morning. The vehicle was a 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser - perfect for the trip including steep mountain roads and off roading, was clean, comfortable and had plenty of space for luggage. Houssaine throughout was outstanding who speaks perfect English, is friendly, gentle, very knowledgeable and we learnt not only about Moroccan life, traditions and history but as Houssaine had Berber nomad ancestry, we also learnt so much about his heritage which he is very proud of and is really interesting. We not only covered the itinerary but did so much more: visiting the last family owned Kasbar in Morocco, drove across the desert to near the Algerian border, visited a traditional rural market, went fossil hunting, had tea in Houssaine’s family nomadic camp, drove through sand dunes, had a visit to a Saudi Prince’s 4x4 collection, visited a community garden, due to recent rain we visited a lake in the dessert which is a rare event. There were convenient coffee breaks and stops to view the stunning scenery during the trip. The accommodation was all great, breakfast and evening meals included in the tour were plentiful and delicious and a special mention to Mohammed in Dades Valley and the fantastic Hamid in the luxury camp who, as with all Moroccans we met, were so welcoming, helpful and they all certainly added to our experience. We thought the tour was great value considering how much we covered. We have travelled a lot including independent road trips in Europe, US, Asia, Australia etc and found this trip a real surprise. Do yourself a favour, if you want an adventure and see the real Morocco, don’t look any further, just book - you won’t regret it! :)

We were grateful to have someone to navigate us around safely. The desert was beyond beautiful and crossing the Atlas Mountains in a snow storm was crazy!

We booked this tour and it was the best thing we did during our time in Morocco. Our driver/guide Mohammed was great, knowledgeable, helpful and kind. We were able to adapt the itinerary to suit our interests and deal with the travel challenges of road closures due to snow. We felt that we really got to see the real Morocco along side more touristy must sees. The accommodation we stayed in was great, especially the huge tent in the desert! All of the food we were provided was good and the local guides arranged for certain stops were good. The vehicle we travelled in was comfortable and spotless, water was regularly provided and stops along the way for photos and amenities. Overall this was a great trip and we’re so glad we did it.

The highlight was the camel ride in the Merzouga desert, that was super cool! And we slept at nice comfortable places and ate very well along the way. However, there was a lot more driving than we had anticipated, and some of the other “sights” were a bit underwhelming. The stops along the way were generally very short, the longest stop we made was at Atlas Studios (which really doesn’t need an hour). We also didn’t do all the things in the itinerary we had seen beforehand, a couple of stops were just cancelled apparently, or exchanged for something else. I had the impression we would take a small hike in an oasis for instance but that didn’t happen. I understand that plans change for different reasons, but this was not communicated to us at all. The driver was a very friendly and sweet guy, but his English knowledge was very basic, and there were a lot of misunderstandings when we tried to ask him questions, so he was basically a chauffeur and not really a guide. All in all it was worth it because of the desert experience, and it was also cool to watch the landscape change so dramatically through the car windows. But be prepared for sitting in a car a lot, and if you can, I would recommend researching other and longer trips so that there is less driving per day and more time to stop and walk around in the different towns and beautiful mountains you pass by. Book a tour with a proper hike included, for example!

We had an absolutely incredible 4-day Sahara Desert trip with Mohammed! From start to finish, everything was perfect. He speaks excellent English and has an impressive knowledge of the local history and culture, which he shared with such passion. Having grown up in the area, he gave us truly authentic experiences. He also took us to a variety of local markets, and every spot we visited was amazing. On top of being a fantastic guide, Mohammed is a genuinely kind, warm, and wonderful person who made us feel comfortable and welcome at all times. This trip was unforgettable, and we highly recommend Mohammed to anyone looking for an exceptional Sahara experience.

Our small group of 6 retirees called on Camel Safaries for a 4-day private tour from Fez to Marrakech via Merzouga. Communication with Ali was smooth and very pleasant to develop the circuit according to our tastes. There was a lot of listening and kindness to our questions , and it was very reassuring. Our driver-guide was Ibrahim, a pearl! He was like a son to us , and the tour was only fun and good humor, almost family . We were amazed by the quality of the accommodation chosen, and by the very romantic camp in Merzouga. We chose "standard model" and not luxury because it was neither our tastes... nor our budget. We are planning another tour later with the family and grandchildren, and it is clear that we will call on Ali to concoct a jewel of a tour, but this time the total! From landing to takeoff!
