The park is also famous for its connection to Elsa the Lioness and the 1966 film *Born Free*, which starred Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers as Joy and George Adamson, the real-life couple who raised the orphaned lioness, Elsa, to adulthood. Meru is also home to a wide variety of other wildlife, including cheetahs, hippos, zebras, giraffes, hartebeest, oryx, oribi, waterbuck, and a rich diversity of bird species.
