Itinerary
San Jose Succotz is a Maya village in the Cayo District of Belize, consisting mainly of people of Yucatec Maya descent. It's located approximately 10 minutes west of San Ignacio Town. Xunantunich Maya Temple is located in this village. We will driver to the village where will get on the hand cranked ferry and cross the Mopan River to gain access to the Maya site.
Here you will find yourself immersed in pristine jungle surroundings, home of howler monkeys, spider monkeys, birds and iguanas. While exploring along with your guide, you will learn about the history of this site and the Maya civilization that once inhabited it. We will break for lunch at a restaurant in the village before heading to the Cave Tubing site.
Learn about the local flora and fauna throughout a 30 minute hike along the rivers’ edge as we make our way to the entrance of the Jaguar Paw Cave. This natural wonder was carved out of the limestone foothills of the Maya Mountains by the river that runs through it and forms part of the largest cave system in all of Central America. Archaeological research notes that the ancient Maya visited the site to conduct important rituals. Once at the entrance we strap on our headlights and life vests and off we go. You are propelled by the gentle currents as your guide educates you about the natural formations found inside the cave. Making our way out of the first cave, the second portion becomes more exciting as the water flows faster. Kick back, relax and enjoy the ride! This is an amazing adventure and one you will always remember.

We had a wonderful time during the whole trip. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable on anything from the local agriculture to the Mayan Ruins, the underground river caves and more. We didn't have to worry about any fees after we booked and the vehicle we traveled in was very clean. I would recommend this trip to anyone.

We booked a stay with Cayo at Terry’s place. When we asked Terry about tour and experience options she said she had guides and shuttle drivers. We were a little worried about using the same company for everything but took a chance. We are VERY HAPPY that we used Cayo Inland Tours for all our local needs. We took 3 shuttles and 2 tours with them and all were great experiences. Wayne was our shuttle driver for all three trips. (Airport in Belize City to San Ignacio, San Ignacio to Placencia, and Placencia to Belize City). Wayne made us feel at home and was very informative as well as accommodating. He stopped for lunch and snacks and on the last shuttle he even brought us home made banana cake. We learned a lot about Belize from Wayne. He is the kind of guy that is always laughing and smiling. Dimas was our guide for Mayan ruins, zip lining and cave/river tubing. All three stops were great and exceeded our expectations. Dimas was knowledgeable about the ruins, the jungle and the cave. Pedro was our guide to Big Rock Waterfall. Again this trip exceeded our expectations and Pedro had a lot to do with making the trip so great. He showed us how to get behind the waterfalls and helped our kids safely do some cliff jumping. All three drivers/guides were long time Cayo employees with around 30 years combined. All three were proud of Belize and seemed to enjoy sharing the history and beauty of their country. We would advise anyone coming to San Ignacio to consider Cayo Inland Adventures and hope you are lucky enough to get Wayne as a driver or Dimas and Pedro as guides.

Providing a seamless, personalized experience from the moment our guests arrive until they depart is exactly what we strive for. Wayne, Dimas, and Pedro will be incredibly grateful for your kind words. They are passionate about Belize and genuinely love sharing its history, culture, and natural beauty with our guests. We'll be sure to pass along your compliments—they'll be delighted to know they helped create such lasting memories for your family. Thank you once again for choosing Terry's Place and Cayo Inland Expeditions. It was our absolute pleasure to be part of your Belize vacation, and we hope to welcome you back for many more adventures in the future. Safe travels, and until next time!

My wife and I truly had an amazing experience on this tour esp because of Bern, who made the entire trip so memorable. We will definitely recommend this tour to our friends and family. Bern was not only professional but he also went far above and beyond our expectations. He arrived 15 minutes earlier than the scheduled pickup time, welcomed us with a warm smile, introduced himself and gave us a detailed overview of the tour for the day. We hopped into his very clean vehicle and made our way to Xunantunich. Throughout our visit, we never felt rushed. Bern was very informative, patient and made the experience enjoyable and relaxing. On our way to the cave tubing adventure, we stopped for lunch, which was a nice addition to the day. The cave tubing experience itself was unforgettable. Inside the dark cave, we even got off our tubes to see the pottery left behind by the Mayans, which was truly incredible and made the experience even more special. Throughout the entire tour Bern consistently provided us with water, fresh towels and a friendly smile. We highly recommend this tour and we hope you get Bern as your tour guide because he truly made the experience exceptional.

Thank you so much for such an incredible and detailed review! We’re absolutely delighted to hear that you and your wife had such a memorable experience exploring Xunantunich and cave tubing with Bern. Bern truly embodies the level of hospitality, professionalism, and care we strive to provide at Cayo Inland Expeditions, and we know he will be so happy to hear how much his efforts meant to you both. From arriving early and sharing his knowledge to making sure you were comfortable throughout the day, it’s wonderful to know he helped make your adventure relaxing, informative, and unforgettable. We’re also glad you enjoyed the combination of history, culture, and adventure — especially the opportunity to see the ancient Mayan pottery inside the caves. Experiences like those are what make exploring Belize so special. Thank you again for your recommendation and kind words about Bern. We truly appreciate your support and hope to welcome you both back for another amazing adventure in the future!
We were picked up on time from our hotel in San Ignacio in a comfortable van. There were 4 of us in the group to visit Xunantunich. After going across the ferry there’s a short, uphill walk to the site. From there our guide explained the history of the site and took us around to the main structures. The climb up the tallest structure is a little scary if you’re not a fan of heights, but the view from the top is well worth it!! The only thing that could’ve been better here is if they gave you a bit more time to explore the rest of your site on your own. We then headed back into town to pick up 2 more people for the cave tubing portion of the tour. This drive to the cave was longer than anticipated, but once we arrived we had a wonderful lunch of chicken, rice, beans, and coleslaw. We got our supplies and then were told that you had to carry your tube to the starting point, which was about a 40 minute hike. We were then told you could pay $5 to have someone take the tube to the starting point for you. We did not as we didn’t have any cash on us at this point, but would definitely recommend you take this option. The hike isn’t hard, but it made it difficult to enjoy the views while trying to also carry a tube the whole way. You also cross the river 3 times, and the current is quite strong in points, so make sure your shoes are secure!! Once we got to the cave, our guide tied our tubes together and we were on our way! It’s an easy float and they even had us get out and walk around in the caves for a few minutes. Once you are out of the river, it’s a short walk back to drop off your supplies, change (the bathrooms and changing rooms at the site are very well maintained), and head back to the hotel! Overall, this was a super fun day! Would definitely recommend for anyone looking for an adventure filled tour!
Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a detailed review—we really appreciate it! It’s great to hear you enjoyed both parts of the day, from exploring Xunantunich to floating through the caves on your tubing adventure. It truly is a special combo of history and adventure! We’re glad everything started off smoothly and that you felt comfortable throughout the tour. The views from the top are definitely worth that climb! We also appreciate your feedback about having a bit more free time at the site—that’s something we’ll continue to look at as we refine the experience. Thank you as well for highlighting the cave tubing portion so thoroughly. The jungle hike and river crossings are all part of the adventure, but your tip about the tube carry (and bringing a little cash) is super helpful for future guests. We’re really happy to hear you enjoyed the lunch and that the facilities met your expectations too. Overall, we’re so glad you had a fun and memorable day, and we truly appreciate your recommendation. We hope to welcome you back for another Belize adventure soon!
Perfect balance of activity for our family and our kids really enjoyed hearing about the Mayan history. Lunch with delish!
Thank you so much for your lovely review! We’re really happy to hear this combo was a great fit for your family. Exploring Xunantunich and then enjoying a relaxing cave tubing adventure makes for such a fun and well-rounded day—especially for kids! It’s great to know they enjoyed learning about the Maya history, and we’re glad lunch hit the spot too. We truly appreciate you choosing us and hope to welcome your family back for another Belize adventure soon!
Goldborn was absolutely fantastic! He was super insightful, not only about the Mayan history, but also about nature, animals, birds, and really everything we could think of. Xuantunich was amazing to see, and the cave tubing was a complete blast. Would 100% recommend to anyone going to Belize.
